It is with great sadness to announce that former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Ernie Holmes has passed away at the age of 59; according to a dispatcher with the Texas Department of Public Safety, Holmes was driving alone Thursday night when his automobile left the roadway and rolled over several times near Lumberton, about 16 miles north of Beaumont; at the time, Holmes was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car he was driving. Holmes was pronounced dead at the scene

One of the anchors of the Pittsburgh “Steel Curtain” defense, the 2-time All-Pro played on 2 Super Bowl teams while with the Steelers from 1972-77; he spent the 1978 season with the New England Patriots. We at NFL Gridiron Gab send out our heartfelt condolences and prayers to Holmes’ immediate and extended family.
