No Turf Here – Steelers to Stay with Grass Playing Field

Heinz Field

Despite playing some of the worst weather games in the NFL and getting blasted by players around the league for it, the Steelers will be sticking with grass at Heinz Field according to a story in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.  While the team will stay with grass, the team has yet to determine what kind of grass it will be.  During team meetings this past week, team President Art Rooney and chairman Dan Rooney decided against going with turf.

The Steelers players were in favor of sticking with grass, but players around the league blasted the field, and just in case you forgot, the team was locked in a battle with at the time winless Dolphins till late in the fourth quarter after a rain storm hit Pittsburgh, making the field basically muck.  Part of the issue is the fact that the Pitt Panthers play there, and the field also hosts high school playoff games in the late fall.

DDGrassMaster has been the playing surface for most of time that Heinz Field has been in existence, which is now seven years. After playing for years at Three Rivers Stadium, which was artificial turf, Dan Rooney was been in favor of grass at the teams new stadium.  While players around the league will not like hearing the news, it’s the Steelers home, and this is the route they want to go with their field.

This is a no brainer and I for one am glad they stuck to their guns and kept the field grass.
Players not wanting to get dirty? This is where the NFL started!
Grass surfaces level the playing field
in the speed slows down and the power go up.
There was never a time growing up where we never played ” because there was no field turf around”

Tell those spoiled players that this is the NFL and their level of play should not depend on the surface they are on.
