Wilson’s Relase Gives the Steelers $2 Mil in Cap Room

Not that it sounds like it will do all that much for the black and gold, the Steelers are going to gain a bit of breathing room for Thursday’s release of wide out Cedric Wilson.  The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that the team has gained more than $2 million in salary cap room for the release of Wilson, who earned his ticket out of town after punching his girlfriend on Wednesday night.  The paper says that the Steelers now have $2.3 million in salary cap room after going down to about $300,000 in salary cap room Wednesday.

The wide out will count $500,000 against the Steelers cap in 2008 due to a pro-rated portion of a $2 mil signing bonus he got when he joined the team in 2005 from the Niners.  There was speculation that Wilson was going to be shown the door anyway if the team picked up a wide out in the draft, or if they would have been able to have found one cheaper in the free agent market if one got released.
