Former Steelers WR Plaxico Burress spoke out to Tim Benz of 105.9 The X about former QB Kordell Stewart and the age old question – was the QB gay? Buress said that the talk DID have an effect on Stewart, but that he doesn’t know if the QB is gay or not. He also talks about it in his new book – Giant: The Road To The Super Bowl, which he wrote with Jason Cole.
“People were talking about [Kordell] being gay,” Burress writes in Chapter 5. “The players heard that, but we never talked about it. I don’t know if Kordell is gay or not. It was none of our business. If ever we would have talked about it, it would have made everybody uncomfortable. If some player was gay, I don’t think he could come out while he was still playing. It would be real hard. It would mess a team up mentally and it wouldn’t be good for that person.” Burress also said that the rumors caused Stewart to withdraw from teammates. “He had to watch the people that he hung around with. Just hanging out with your friends, or your boys and your cousins, all those things come to the surface. I think he just insulated himself after a while.”

I have to say that I really dont/didnt care what Kordell’s sexual orientation is. He played in some very big games for the Steelers and gave us Steeler fans some very exciting moments. He may not have been a great QB, but he was a great athlete and the Steelers and their fans should be grateful that he played for us. Gay or not,it doesnt make any difference on how he performed on the field. To be honest, I dont know why Plax would consider that a distraction for a team. Teammates should act like teammates no matter what.

Lame excuse for your team sucking ass. If you’re on any sort of team and your teammate is gay you wouldn’t even care. What makes for bad morale & “mess up a team mentally,” is when you disgrace or shame a member of your team aka your family for who they are. Get over it! You have a job to do and working with people that you dislike or don’t agree with religiously, sexually, politically or gender wise is part of life. Hell, living with DIFFERENT kinds of people is LIFE. Real men grow up and learn to be adults & professional and understand that everyone is different.
