Any free agent cornerbacks you want?

ESPN’s James Walker answered today the question about if there are any shutdown corners in the free agent market that the Steelers may go after. Here was his answer:

No one unrestricted really catches my eye, Shawn. Most “shutdown” — i.e. elite — corners never hit the free-agent market, because they’re such a rare commodity. But last month I mentioned an intriguing trade scenario involving San Diego Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie that I think the Steelers should explore. He’s in the final year of his rookie contract at a relatively affordable salary. The Chargers reportedly are interested in getting something for Cromartie before he bolts (no pun intended), and Cromartie will be hungry to have a great 2010 season while in a contract year. It could be a win-win for both teams if the asking price is reasonable.

Ok, so what would the Steelers give up James? A draft pick maybe, but to me that would be it.

Cromartie would be great to have, but Ive heard that the Bolts are looking for a rb since LT is gone and Sproles might not be back as well. The Steelers dont have the depth at rb to make an inticing offer for Cromartie, so it will definitely have to be a draft pick. In my opinion, I think a 2nd and possibly a late-mid pick #could get it done, but thats just speaking as a fan. I dont recall the Steelers ever making a big splash trade, but who knows the Steelers could be open for a trade come draft time. I would love to see that deal happen. Cromatie would be a #1 corner and allow Taylor to move back down to 2. With Troy back there as well, then thats one solid secondary.

I also am unimpressed with the free agent corner class.
I wouldn’t mind seeing the Steelers trade for Cromartie but I don’t think that they will for 2 reasons (1. Steelers generally don’t make big trades for a player. 2. Steelers generally don’t give incoming players huge paydays and that is what Cromartie will be looking for since he is better than any of the free agents available).
Oh, well, if the Steelers don’t trade for Cromartie, maybee they will be able to draft someone like Perrish Cox who could be a 2nd corner this year and maybee take over as #1 sometime in the next 2 years.

I haven’t heard much from Crommartie the past two years, (God that Alyssa Milano Commercial is HOT—-and she wears a Steelers shirt as well)…anyway, they (S.D.) drafted Cason a couple years ago, there’s reasons for these things…I’d stay away from this trade, where there’s smoke….
