OT Scott to Miss Three Months After Surgery; What To Do on the O-Line?

It was a tough day to be a tackle for the Steelers Monday and yesterday, as the team lost Willie Colon for the year, and rookie Chris Scott had to have surgery on his foot. There was some question on if Scott would be lost for the season, but that is not the case according to the Post Gazette:

Rookie tackle Chris Scott, the team’s fifth-round draft choice, also will have surgery today to repair a broken foot — an injury he sustained while working out at the University of Tennessee, his alma mater.

Scott is expected to be out approximately three months, meaning he would miss the entire preseason and would not return until October at the earliest.

Now the question will be, what do the Steelers do for filling Colon’s spot, and for depth at the position? Trai Essex is one guy that will be in the mix, but many fans I have heard from are already voicing their displeasure at assuming he’ll be the answer for Colon.

Then of course there is the Flozell Adams situation, and if he comes in one would have to think he’ll be a starter on the line, and you would hope would be able to fill that void. But the Steelers are one of a couple teams with interest in the big 340-pound linemen.

This is another bad break, but as a 5th round rookie, Chris Scott would have been a backup at best. I doubt that his loss will affect team thinking on the starting O-line. (His injury is sadly reminiscent of the one to L. Timmons that forced him to miss most of his first season.)

Now consider what we have left: T. Essex is adequate at OT, but better at OG; the senior OT Scott we acquired via FA and Foster are better candidates to replace Colon, who is lost for the season; Pouncey (C or OG) is a rookie and untested; Urbik (OG), and Hill (OT) lack seasoning and\or talent. F. Adams wants too much money. Given all of that, my guess is K. Colbert is out beating the bushes as we speak, looking for a starting OT, but hoping at the least to find a solid backup OT. There’s a long season ahead, and our O-line talent looks awfully thin at the moment.

The Squeelers are on the decline. Their attempts at shoring up their leaky offensive line have failed. Their best receivers are gone. Their running game is stumbling and their defense is porous. Get ready to surrender 8 more sacks to the Browns second string.
