‘The Hotel’ Opens in Pittsbugh – Steelers Sign OT Flozell Adams

For those of you that were panicking about the Steelers offensive line entering training camp, help is on the way.

The team on Thursday came to terms with Flozell Adams, a former member of the Dallas Cowboys who is a force on the line at 6-7, 338 pounds. Nicknamed “The Hotel,” Adams is a five-time Pro Bowl lineman.

It’s unknown whether Adams will play on the left or right side for the Steelers. He will add depth to a squad that lost OT Willie Colon to a torn Achilles heel in early July. Colon will miss the entire season.

Adams is a natural left tackle, which means if he plays there the team would put Max Starks on the right side. Either way, it’s a move that the team needed to make to add some needed size and ability to the line, as Adams is a player that can walk right in and help from day one.

Matt Loede has been in the sports media for over 16 years, with experience covering the MLB, NBA, and NFL. On Sunday’s during football season, you can hear Matt on national networks like Fox Sports Radio, Associated Press, and others. Born and raised in Cleveland Ohio, Matt studies and talks football inside and out, and is anxious to share his thoughts and comments with readers on a daily basis.

I almost don’t believe it; not that Adams is Orlando Pace or Walter Jones or Joe Thomas, he’s not. But the fact remains he’s an upgrade over our depth behind Colon and it shows that the Steelers are willing to spend some money to improve weak areas in the short term. I can’t help but believe that THEY believe in some of the younger guys like the rookie Scott from Tennessee and Ramon Foster and maybe even Urbik but obviously not yet and when you’re set up the way we are at virtually every other position, why not go for it.

I agree with Jay that Adams is not the Second Coming of Orlando Pace, but he is a very talented OT, even at age 35. An O-line, left to right)of Adams, Kemoeatu, Hartwig, Essex, and Starks, with Pouncey a strong possibility to win the RG position and\or back up or replace Hartwig at C. and Ramon Foster available to substitute for and eventually replace Adams or Starks makes this a solid line for the first time in years. Urbik, Hills, Scott and the rest of the O-line candidates will now be in a dog fight for the remaining spots. If the Steelers can’t run the ball this year, it is not because they lack the talent. Arians should now be able to run or pass, as the situation dictates, behind this group, assuming they all stay healthy.

Adams acquisition also tell us that the coaches assessed their existsing O-line mix and analyzed it correctly; they didn’t have the horses. Hats off to K. Colbert, M. Tomlin, and the Rooneys for facing reality and making the Adams deal happen. Whether or not Adams turns out to be the answer, as he appears to be now, we can thank the Steelers organization for doing their best to make the O-line much better with this move.

The larger question still remains whether LeBeau has the necessary horses to fix our porous and aging defense. In a few weeks, we’ll know a lot more on that front than we do now.

I partially like this move. He is a big tackle and should help sure up the o-line. Although, he gets penalized more than any other o-linemen. He is either false-starts or getting called for tripping. Yes he does have 5 pro bowls, but I cant help but think that he wore a cowboys jersey and that helped him make the team. I am optimisitic off raw talent, but I am pretty weary to this signing.

It is a solid move and no doubt helps the O-line. Adams starts immediately, either right or left tackle. I am saying he goes to left Tackle and Starks goes back to his RT position. This should solidify the outside and improve the inside at the same time. Pouncy, Kemo,Hartwig, and all others can now settle in and know their roles. If this team cannot run this season, it wont be because the line isnt better!
