This is what I’ve learned after our “dress rehearsal.”
Offense: our RG simply sucks! Trai Essex is horrendous. There ain’t no other way to put it. To be a veteran like him and get beat on a spin move by a OLB/DE (Ayers) is inexcusable. I think the Steelers are giving him ample time/attempts/reps to prove himself because they kept running off the right side and he kept not making blocks…In fact, our entire interior offensive line outside of Pouncey is horrible. Kemoateau getting called for holding…None of ’em can block the “quick” interior. It should be noted that if you’re on the field and you can’t block the quick interior, then you should be able to “maul!” I’m not even sure our interior offensive linemen, outside of Pouncey, can maul! Then why are you on the field?! One can only hope that Ramon foster is being looked at as an alternative OG and, for the future, Willie Colon is converted to OG. I can barely watch Essex play. Also, it looked as if they were working Legursky at RG…didn’t look too good to me. The good is, in terms of the o-line, that Pouncey looks awesome and Tony Hills and Ramon Foster continue to impress.
As far as Dixon…If anyone thought he was gonna come in and throw all over the field and read defenses, etc., then you probably don’t understand this game. He is what he is…a nice athlete who has potential as a pocket passer but for all due intent purposes, he currently is a change of pace guy. I’m not upset by his performance because I wasn’t expecting much from him. I hope Arians is purposefully calling garbage plays in the red zone and on short yardage otherwise he is a garbage play caller in the red zone and short yardage because that’s what he’s calling in the red zone and short yardage: garbage.
Defense: We have 9 guys on defense: 3 DL, 4 LB, and two safeties. We don’t put corners on the field…or at least it doesn’t seem like it…I am finally at the point where I want us to take a stud corner in round one! I just can’t believe how subpar our corners are. Can we please some cover one with 15 inches of cushion in lieu of fifteen yards!?! On the good side the Steelers are doing the SAME thing with WORILDS THAT THEY DID WITH WOODELY HIS ROOKIE YEAR; drop him into coverage often which means they are trying to expedite his development which means a LB corps of Woodley and Worilds on the outside and Timmons and Harrison on the inside could be imminent within the next two years. I cannot even fathom a LB corps that looks like that. ALso, I opine that Dwyer HAS to make this team because he probably won’t clear waivers and a RB trifecta of Mendy, Redman and just the potential of Dwyer means it is a position that might not have to be addressed in the draft for years to come lest Pittsburgh seeks a scatty type of pass catcher to be gotten in the third or fourth round for third down pass catching. We need a shut down corner and another interior offensive linemen! I believe tony Hills can actually start in this league…he has great technique and quick feet…It doesn’t matter what string you play against when you have those two attributes.

Great observations Jay! I want to go a bit further, but I think you covered it. Was Keenan Lewis so eager to impress that he didnt have his head in the game? I agree with Jay on the Dixon thing too. Everyone loves the back-up, but who really believes that Dixon is ready to start opening day? Not me. I said earlier that Dixon was looking good against 2nd and 3rd stringers. Thats good for his developement, but not the answer to “who is STARTING on Sept. 12th” As for the line, well, this is what it is steeler fans. I do think its an improvement in a few ways. Pouncey is going to be VERY good. It might be time to take Jay’sstance and see if Hills,Foster or both at the same time should start. Essex is BAD,Kemo has been average. Sept. 12th is coming fast guys!
