Tomlin sending a message?

Think the Steelers head coach isn’t peeved about his teams effort from Sunday night? Think again.

Mike Tomlin sent a message to his players on Wednesday, sending them out on the practice field in full pads for the first time since early in the season.

It tells everyone that what happened Sunday night isn’t going to be taken lying down. They are going to do whatever it takes to change the vibe that has surrounded the team after the beating they took at the hands of the Pats.

“I hope that everybody’s pissed off,” said linebacker James Farrior, their defensive captain. “The way we played last week was definitely unacceptable. It’s something we can’t have if we’re going to be a championship team. So, I think guys are going to be focused in this week and into practice every day this week and we’re going to come back ready to play.”

They had better be ready to play, or those rumors of a repeat of a 2009 collapse happening again will be basically true if they lose their third game in four tries.

I hope that Tomlin is also pissed about the predictability of the Steelers offense and does something about it right away. The run on 1st & 2nd down and pass on 3rd and long game plan is obvious to everyone except the coaching staff.

If Tomlin failed to get ‘effort’ from his team against the Pats, a measure of discipline might be warranted. But if the team was fatigued and beaten up after playing Cincinnati on Monday night, then punishing the players makes no sense. I am inclined to think the latter was the case last Sunday, and whatever message Tomlin is sending is misaddressed.

I am in agreement with tpetra above: Tomlin should first direct a message to Arians and LeBeau to adapt their respective schemes to the battered talent that remains and make personnel changes as needed. Consider that the Pats defense featured four (4) rookies and a rookie receiver scored all three of their TDs! Somehow, the Pats coaches reversed a dreadful loss to Cleveland by manhandling and outplaying the Steelers, with less talent than we have. Good coaches find a way. To my mind, it wasn’t only the Steelers players that stunk it up last Sunday.

Im not sure I could care less right now…ALl I hear when Tomlin or anyone in this organization talks is, “mumbo jumbo, mumbo jumbo…” A baby on the way and completing a masters program and I thought I could fall back on my team to alleviate some stress and help fulfill a passionate hobby of mine, football. But like I said earlier in the week, GO FUCK YOURSELVES PITTSBURGH IF YOU CAN’T BEAT NEW ENGLAND!!! It’s Thursday night and I’m still not past it…not holding a grudge, may be that I’m just trying to move away and detach myself! I’m sick of this offense, I’m sick of the suck DB’s we put on the field and I’m sick of the bullshit lip service from our coaches…Ownership told Tomlin to get younger and they brought back McFadden, Randle El, Foote and let go of Thaddues Gibson! Worilds hardly sees the field unless it’s special teams and the same goes for Sylvester. Where is Antonio Brown?!? Really, we gave extensions to Aaron Smith, Casey Hampton and Keisel??? All of whom are 30 plus years old? We signed Mewelede Moore on the backass end of his career…Oh yeah, Clark sucks but he got an extension too! He’s also over 30! Farrior still sees the field and he is in his mid thirties! But New England gets away with playing 4-5 rookies, the 29th ranked defense and the 20th ranked offense and came into our house and whooped on us…Sorry, CHOOSING not to get over this one for a very, very long time simply because as a principle-driven person, it goes against my principles to get behind a team that represents this way!

Jay, we gave extensions to our entire defensive line because when healthy, they are the best runstoppers in all of football as a unit. You should know that rookies hardly ever see any playing time in LeBeau’s defense because they need to learn the system and earn the right to be on the field. Farrior even at his age has proven to be a valuable asset to the team, granted he has lost a step, but that is where Timmons needs to be the guy on D. I will agree with you that our defensive backs have been putrid at times this year. Bringing McFadden back has been good at times thus far but as of late has been getting exposed. I am not sure why the Steelers didn’t decide to cut Gay along with Reed, one can’t put the full blame on him but a large amount for constantly getting scorched. It is clear that injuries has plagued our team especially on the offensive line/ defensive line. I honestly believe that this current team still has what it takes to make a deep playoff run, nor do I think we are about to have another midseason collapse. I do agree with Jay that we need to get younger. This offseason I would love to see the Steelers draft Pouncey’s brother the guard from Florida to help contribute to the line. Drafting well does help, but we really need to go out and sign a viable cornerback, last time I checked we were not the Pirates. Lets spend some money!
