Roethlisberger Takes the Crushing Loss to Heart

In the end, it was not a good night for Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers franchise quarterback, who had been though so much over the past 11 months, could have cemented his legacy with another Super Bowl win in Dallas.

Instead, it’s the two-time Super Bowl winner who was quiet and reserved after a stunning 31-25 loss to the Packers in which he threw two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown to make it 14-0 in the first quarter.

While there was plenty of blame to go around the black and gold locker room, Roethlisberger decided to put the weight of Super Bowl XLV on his shoulders.

“It was hard-fought. Obviously, it’s disappointing to lose,” Roethlsiberger said. “For me it’s even more disappointing because you feel like you let a lot of people down that stood up today to fight – people like Doug Legursky, Trai Essex, Ramon Foster, Antwaan Randel El. Personally, I feel like I let a lot of people down.

“I don’t put the blame on anybody but myself,” he said. “I feel like I let the city of Pittsburgh down, the fans, my coaches, my teammates. It’s not a good feeling.”

The Steelers fought back thanks to the play of the QB and the defense, as the club got within three in the fourth quarter at 28-25. The defense though allowed a Green Bay drive that ended with a field goal to make it 31-25, and in the Steelers final drive, they managed one first down but then five yards and three incomplete passes to end the season.

“They did a great job of taking away deep things and taking away the outside,” Roethlisberger said. “You’re kind of stuck with very limited options there with that much time and no timeouts left. We just had to try to do what we could do.”

The final drive isn’t though what lost the game for the Steelers, it was three turnovers that resulted in 17 Packers points. In a game decided by 6, allowing 17 points on turnovers says it all.

“We’re a team of fighters. We don’t quit. We believe in each other,” Ben said. “We were going to fight all the way to the last second, which I think we did. If I had played a little bit better, I feel like we would have had a better chance to win the game.”

The first INT was a killer, as Nick Collins took it back 37 yards for a score. The second, a catch over the middle that should have been made by Mike Wallace, resulted in the score to make it 21-3. The Steelers rallied to score before half to make it 21-10, but by then, they were playing catch up all night.

“You know what, you’ve got to give them a lot of credit,” Roethlisberger said. “They’re a great defense; they got after us and I turned the ball over and you can’t do that.”

I don’t think Wallace should have made that catch. The safety ball hawked it, plain and simple. Great read and adjustment. Ben wouldn’t have made that throw if he was aware of the whole situation. He was trying to make a play and it didn’t go right. We didn’t get the bounces last night. I give the Packers their due.

I blame Big Ben. He took us out of the game single handedly. High throws and holding on to the ball too long. He’s overated and nowhere near an elite QB. Put him on Indies team or the Patriots and he would fail miserably. The steelers defense is the only thing that keeps him in the games. He’s completely overated and cost us the game!

I think wardrules86 deserves the bone-head comment of the day award. How many superbowls did the steelers win in the last 20 years? The steelers had multiple sb teams that couldnt get it done bc everyone said they didnt have a qb. Now they get Big Ben and he wins 2 sbs and almost a 3rd last night.
Did Ben play great last night? no… but did he cost the steelers the game? no.
Last night the secondary got exploited like most people thought it would happen. Key 3rd down conversions for GB and big pass plays all night long doomed the steelers.

You’re wrong. The first super bowl with Ben the steelers won in spite of him. He was horrible that game. the 2nd he had a decent game and he lost the 3rd super bowl all by himself. So really he’s 1 for 3 in super bowls.

Additionally, he’s great at making comebacks at the end of games, but where is he for the first 3 quarters.

Tomlin has lost control of that team. He has no idea what he’s doing.

I love the steelers but something has to change.

George H, as usual I agree with your analysis. Ben is not to blame for this loss. But he had less than a stellar game. Just for the record, here are Ben’s QB ratings for each Super Bowl:
        XLV – 77.4
        XLIII – 93.2
XL – 22.6 (the lowest in NFL history)

Even if we throw out XL and attribute that to his inexperience, the last two Super Bowls were not QB clinics on Ben’s part. As you know, I attribute much of Ben’s under-performance to Arians’ offensive scheme and play calling. Having said that, Ben is one of the highest paid QBs in the NFL — he is paid as an elite QB — and he simply has not played up to that level consistently, especially on the big stage.

Either Ben isn’t as good as we think he is, or Arians isn’t getting results commensurate with the talent the Rooneys are paying for. Take your pick. No matter what spin you put on it, the facts won’t go away.

Much as I hate to say it, the Packers were on their game yesterday. That said, the better team did not win — the Packer QB average and no matter how hard he tries, he will never be Brett Favre — that takes talent — he’s a second stringer and always will be.

wardrules86 has to be the most ridiculous blogger I have seen here since that Raven idiot Crowley! Dude, your comments are so over the top and moronic, the only reason I am commenting on them instead of ignoring your stupidity is to poke fun at you. You are a Steeler fan? You claim to actually know football? Tomlin has no clue? Ben is absent most of a game? He deserves the blame for this loss? Trade Polamalu for Rodgers(Like that would ever be an option)? Bro, you are too much!

BEn played a weak game, but the fumble killed us.. If we score there we rip thier hearts OUT! Big MO was with us until that crap! Ben did not loose this game you freaks! If the line held up on the pick 6 look at wallace he was 5 yrds past the corner and thats a td! All I got to say is the real steeler nation dont look for excuses…The oline played AWESOME! Hats off to D. Lergursky wow man killer job! Hines dont even think about retiring…BEN HEADS UP MAN! We know you way better than that! You live, breath and DIE with the Steelers FOR LIFE! Honestly, ben played a decent game last night with what he was given. Where was the pass defense for almost the whole game? botched coverage by gay on at least one play and a few times caught guessing wrong by troy caused a lot of issues. Why dick didn’t blitz troy I really don’t know…

    February 7, 2011 at 9:03 pm

Ward?? Really?? SMH!! Guys lets face it, the issue are the same issues we have been living with the last few years. O-line stinks with the exception of Pouncey and Flozell. The corners are weak, Ike is OK but a good secondary needs 3 ok corners not 1 and 1 who is hurt every week (sorry Bryant but true) and 1 who thinks he is Troy but covers about as good as Trai Essex would at corner (Gay gets A for effort but E for execution). Troy and Clark are great but they cant make up for all the poor corner play. If we can get another dominant line men this year (like Pounceys brother) and a stout corner, we will be stacked! Good news is this team is relatively young on offense (Ward being the exception) and we keep breeding dominant LB’s. So if we fix these issue’s we wont have to point the blame of Ben getting blasted because of poor blocks and QBs like Aaron and Brady shredding our corners. And as far as the dig at Tomlin….. lay off the shrooms! Even if he is not the best coach in the NFL he is still in the top 3! So to all you haters LMB!! and to the nation, see you next year!

    • Steel Q

      February 7, 2011 at 10:30 pm

  12. The girl that claims rape...

Also the Steelers don’t throw money around to get big name players like Nnandi A. We only go after bargain free agents or in extreme need we will reach with $ a little (flozell). Rooneys should just hire me for their personel department. I’m sure I can at least do better then Matt Millen (sorry couldnt pass on the dig).

Even after going down 21-3, having three turnovers this team battled back and should have taken the lead if it wasn’t for Mendy’s fumble. What I can’t understand is after the 5 yard completion to Hines on the final drive why did the next three passes go to # 17? It was clear that he and Ben weren’t on the same page most of the game? That 4th and 5 should have been to Hines/Heath or check down!

You should hear the giant sigh of relief up here in Massachusetts from Pats fans. They’re all so happy now that the Steelers lost and that Ben didn’t get # 3. What a bunch of insecure phonies!! I’m coming to the Burgh later this year for that Pats game for sure!

Personally, I was stunned. I don’t accept that GB was the better team.

What I saw was a different Steeler team……..I barely recognized Polamalu. And where were keissel and Harrison? I know they were there, I saw the numbers but they, again, whatttttttt the heck happened?

They did not play the same football, changed the game or were so frightened of Rogers that they gave up. They appeared confused and muddled. Grrrrrrrr. Sorry. I can’t excuse them. I love the Steelers but the game they played was pathetic.

I TRULY CANNOT BELIEVE SOME OF THIS STUFF THAT IS BEING WRITTEN!!! I WISH IT WAS FROM PACKER FANS BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT’S NOT. BEEN IS AN ELITE QB AND TO SAY HE IS FAR FROM IT MAKES YOU A MORON. AND TO LAY IT ON RASHARD MENDENHALL IS JUST AS BONEHEADED. THEN IF THATS NOT GOOD ENOUGH LETS THROW MIKE TOMLIN AND TROY UNDER THE BUS!!! IF YOU COMBINE THEM ALL THATS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED THEY COLLECTIVELY HAD A BAD GAME. THE ONE THING THAT GLARINGLY NEEDS POINTED OUT IS THE PANALTIES THAT HAVE OCCURED ON A REGULAR BASIS, AND AT THE MOST CRITICAL TIMES ALL SEASON. THAT HAS GOT TO BE FIXED IN THE SPRING.AND IF U WANT TO BLAME K. FOX, GO AHEAD DESERVES IT. WHEN MIKE TOMLIN’S TENURE IS DONE IN PITTSBURGH (HOPEFULLY DECADES FROM NOW), IF STAYING CONSISTANT AS HE IS, WILL ARGUABLY GO DOWN AS THE BEST HEAD COACH PITTSBURGH HAS EVER HAD!!! SO WHY DONT WE STAND BEHIND THEM AND GIVE THEM ALL SOME CREDIT FOR WHAT THAT HAVE ACHIEVED AND OVERCOME THIS SEASON AND CHEER THEM ON LIKE THE FAMILY WE LOVE TO PORTARY WHEN CAMERAS ARE AROUND, INSTEAD OF BEING SELFISH SINCE WE HAVE BEEN SO SPOILED OVER THE YEARS BY HAVING A GREAT WINNING ORGANIZATION TO BE A PART OF!!!!!

Sorry to hear about your kids being upset, but lets face it…. this team has lost its way. We don’t run the ball successfully anymore, the middle of our defense (farrior, polumalu) can’t play the pass, and our QB Big Ben aka “Captain Bubble Screen” can’t complete passes down field.

I hate to say it, but maybe your kids shouldn’t believe in this team. My steelers have seemed to have lost their way under Tomlin. It’s not the same team.

wardrules WTF, it wasn’t polamalu’s fault they lost, it was clearly that loser Big Ben. His throws were off and it seemed like at times he was trying to kill our best receiver wallace. Maybe if he wouldn’t have been out drinking and partying earlier in the week then he would’ve played better. I thought veterans know not to get all caught up in the hype and to wait till after the superbowl to party. When is this guy going to learn to control himself and how many more chance is our front office going to give him? Don’t blame polamalu you moron, blame the big guy!

          February 8, 2011 at 8:12 pm

          beaverfallssteelers#1fan,

i agree that ben was a big part of the reason we lost, but you have to admit that Polumalu hasn’t been the same since he went all “hollywood” with the commercials. He needs to refocus and commit to the steeler nation in the off season. That’s why i suggested we bring someone in to compete with him and keep him honest.

As for big ben boozing it up during the week, it doesn’t surprise me. He embarrassed us in the off season and he embarrassed us in the super bowl. We should seriously think about drafting a QB with our first round pick. Maybe even trade up and see if we can get Jake Locker?

1.) Troy was hurt all throughout the playoffs…. during the season when he was healthy he was defensive player of the year so lay off Troy.

2.) Again Ben isnt to blame for the lost… First int, not a great play call and his arm was hit so the ball just floated in the air. Second int I blame more on wallace. Wallace cant let the safety break his route like the way Bush did. Unacceptable.

3.) The defense had 0 intensity… if you told me the steelers would put up 25 points against the Packers defense you would assume we would win the game with our stout defense. Where was our linebackers? How are we going to let Starks rip off 8 and 9 yard runs? The secondary was literally non-existent. Letting off big 3rd down conversions and the inability to stop the pass is what doomed the Steelers… not Big Ben, granted he wasnt on his A game he still played well enough for the win.

    • wardrules86

      February 9, 2011 at 1:27 pm

      George,

If Troy was hurt, then he shouldn’t be out there playing. He was being selfish and it cost us the game!

2nd, you say the reason Ben threw the pick was because he got his arm hit. He needs to know that when you’re backed up in your own end zone, you shouldn’t pump fake and try and force a throw.

As for the defense, i agree with you that they came out with NO intensity what so ever. Wouldn’t you say that’s on the coaches for not getting them up for the game???

    • beaverfallssteelers#1fan

      February 9, 2011 at 1:33 pm

      George H,

I agree with you on some points but I disagree with you on others. First, I completely agree that Troy was the heart and soul of our defense until he got hurt. I know during the playoffs he was banged up and I know he’s a warrior that wanted to play, but he should’ve swallowed his pride and sat out on certain plays for the good of the team. Certainly on obvious passing plays he shouldn’t have been out there. ……..and since he had to be out there then why didn’t we see him come off the edge at all? What happened to our creativity LeBeau? All season we were unpredictable and then we change everything once we get to the big dance.
Second, Ben didn’t play well enough for us to win b/c we lost! Wallace had 9 catches and Ward had 7, why didn’t Ben spread it out like he did all season? It was like he gave up on all our other weapons or he wasn’t prepared. I said it before and I’ll say it again the rumors must’ve been true about him partying like a rock star two days before the game b/c he played like crap. He needs to grow up and act like an NFL quarterback both on and off the field. The only thing that he did right was apologize to the nation and the city after the game b/c it was his fault and he knew it. I love the Steelers and our great city but I’m embarrassed for us when people stick up for Big Ben. When is the guy going to get it, enough is enough!

      • wardrules86

        February 9, 2011 at 1:41 pm

Great point on not spreading the ball around. What happened to Heath Miller???? Ben didn’t even look his way!

Ben was probably still hung over!!!

        • DrGeorge

          February 9, 2011 at 3:59 pm

I didn’t mention this in my comments above, but Ben’s erratic play may have had something to do with his head hitting the turf hard in the first half. No one has said that he suffered a mild concussion, but his eyes were rolling around when he removed his helmet, and his play was never sharp after that. And he has been prone to concussions ever since the motorcycle accident. Just a thought.

          • wardrules86

            February 9, 2011 at 4:23 pm

The problem with that is we can’t trust Ben’s on field mannerisms. He’s been well documented being a “soccer player” type of guy that can barely walk one second and the next he’s running down the field.

If you ask my opinion, it’s all an act. I’m tired of his theatrics.

          • Jay

            February 9, 2011 at 4:29 pm

The first GB touchdown drive was actually good defense on our part…getting to Rodgers just as he was throwing, etc. GB was just better than our defense on that EARLY first TD drive. You’re (collective you’re) nuts if you (collective you) claim to not have seen any of that this year. On the contrary, our defense typically gives up a TD drive or two to REALLY, REALLY, REALLY good offenses and maybe a field goal or two (to the same really good offenses). So like 20 points against really explosive offenses (around 13-15 against average to mediocre ones)…Go look it up!!!!! GB’s 2nd TD is on ARIANS, morons! You don’t call a FUCKING NINE ROUTE FROM YOUR OWN 7!!!!!!! PERIOD!!!!!!! That’s all, stop over analyzing and just realize that, like Steve Young said, Ben doesn’t and never really has regularly picked defenses apart on regular basis! He gets hot particularly late in games (an attribute I would take over any other QB)! That INT for 6 never shoulda happened because it never shoulda been called. The synergy, of you will, or relationship in more appropriate terms that BB has with asshole Arians is one that involves symbiosis—Ben is allowed autonomy late in halves and allowed to periodically audible when necessary if he sticks to Arians’ game plan and play-by-play calls! This sin’t rocket science! Oh and ward rules whatever your name is if you know anything about football which clearly you don’t, you have to pump fake and hold the safety over the middle or else you can’t make the play. He was following the structure of the play. I am not saying he had his best game…he didn’t. We all know that and it sucks that he didn’t on that stage. But it has nothing to do with going out on Tuesday or not being a great QB! He did bring us down the field to cut the deficit 21-10 at halftime. His second int is moreso on him than the 1st one because he shoulda made a better read and Wallace actually coulda made a better play on the ball! Give GB credit for being aggressive up the middle of their D unlike what we were able to do! Our defense was the primary reason we lost. Plain and simple. Our offense scored 25 points against the league’s second best D and you wanna rake them?!?! That suck offensive line showed up and played their ASSES off! You wanna blame a player on offense outside of the OC, blame Mendenhall as much as I hate to say it but that fumble….There’s just no excuse for it! And the secondary….well I won’t go as far as to say trade Troy but his best years are most likely behind him which simply means we need to start drafting DBs high like in rounds 1 and 2! If you have the league’s best D and score 25 points against the second best D but give up over 300 yards passing when there shoulda been 400yards passing because of all of GB’s drops….look no further than to the pass defense!!!!

I agree that the defense didn’t play their best, but Ben cost us the game. The first pick, where you claim it was Arians fault, was actually Bens. He never looked the saftey off. He pump faked to the side of the field he was throwing to. That’s all on Ben.

If you ask me, Arians had a good game plan, but his drunk QB blew it for him.

He was pump faking to that side but underneath you moron…bringing the safety down, had Ben bene able to get the ball up and deep, the fake pulled the safety down and over to that same side making his angle much more diificult, instead he got hit because Arians called a DEEP play from their own seven! You don’t do it…The Pats didn’t do it when they had Moss…teams are supposed to wait until they get some breathing room before even thinking about a bomb! learn football!

OMG Mr. Leode please block wardrules86 from ever commenting again.

Dr.George- interesting take on a possible concussion.

Its been proven throughout Troy’s career that when hes hurt he doesnt roam the line of scrimmage. Are you really suggesting a backup safety is still better than Troy not at 100 percent? Even if Troy isnt all there, the opposing offense still has to account for him unlike whatever backup we put in there.

      George H,

Your’re right. Rodgers definitley accounted for Troy when he was playing. He scanned the field, found where Troy was, and threw it in his direction for touchdowns.

How can you argue with this???? Saying i should be blocked for giving my opinion as a steeler fan is bogus.

        George H and wardrules86,

All I’m saying is that on obvious passing situations he should not have been out there and yes it would’ve been nice to have seen him run or pass blitz at least once. We don’t know how the backup would’ve done b/c he was never out there so you can’t say that he couldn’t have done better then a healthy Troy. I know Troy was playing hurt, but maybe that touchdown when the safeties were split wouldn’t have happened had Troy not been out there. Also, it was obvious that Rodgers was attacking the two safeties b/c he threw for 3 td’s with more then half of his completions were over the middle. The safeties were almost non existent and Rodgers new it.

The blame is not just on Troy; Clark was bad, Taylor was ok, McFadden was bad, Gay was bad. I would definitely not resign Gay and I would cut McFadden, he’s not the player we used to have. Honestly, I think the Steelers need to find a replacement for Clark. He looks old and slow and only looks for the big hit instead of making a play on the ball.
