Tomlin “confident” Polamalu will play Sunday vs. Bengals

Troy Polamalu has no symptoms of a concussion and coach Mike Tomlin said today he is “confident at this juncture” that he will play for the Steelers Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

“All things are positive,” Tomlin said of Polamalu, who must still pass concussion tests later in the week in order to play.

Polamalu left Sunday night’s game at Kansas City in the first series when he took a knee to the head making a tackle.

We are definitely going to need Troy in this crucial divisional match-up this week. Without Troy on Sunday night, our defense was able to play well enough against a well below average Chiefs offense. Our run defense appeared to be sluggish again and without Troy disguising blitzes, we were not able to apply ample pressure on Palko. We are definitely going to need him to be ready to attack and confuse Andy Dalton. Hopefully the defense remembers how to use their hands to catch the ball this week against Cinci

Good article in the Trib by Kovacevic. I am sure many will disagree with it though…

Interesting article indeed. It is nice to know that the Steelers have depth all throughout the team and have starters in waiting, however every team gets plagued with injuries and were lucky it hasn’t been our qb like some other teams have felt that pain. Every team has their injuries and deal with them the best they can, so praising the Steelers depth isn’t as needed as it may seem. I do like having some of the younger guys and back ups get their recognition for playing a solid game, however this team is still a far cry away from winning the Superbowl and those are the matters that should be discussed and addressed rather than praising a teams depth after a very sloppy win against an inferior opponent… and btw the Chiefs have more crippling injuries than the Steelers do (QB, RB, TE, SS, just to name a few)

Well said, George H. You hit the nail on the noggin.

Despite our low position in recent drafts, our front office has drafted well, and our coaching staff has developed raw talent into polished players, especially on offense — think Wallace (Rd 3), Antonio Brown (Rd 6), and David Johnson (Rd 7). Our offensive depth is solid NFL quality, and we are only on OT away from having a dominant O-line again.

But our defensive depth is illusory. We have good people — big names — but aging ones. And we lack those ‘freaks of nature’ that elevate the whole team, as Hampton, Aaron Smith, and Farrior did in their youth and Polamalu still does when he’s healthy.

The KC game illustrated the problem. Hood and Heyward (our last two first round picks)played acceptably; but they did not display any remarkable qualities. They are rarely the first one to the QB or the ball carrier; they still take too long getting rid of blockers; neither has outstanding speed or strength. Against KC, almost all of our big plays on the D-line were made by Keisel, age 33, who played an outstanding game.

Next season looks even worse. Farrior (36), Hampton (34),Chris Hoke (35), and Aaron Smith (35) probably aren’t going to be with us, and their talents won’t be easy to replace. Our final record will slot us low again in the 2012 draft, and the ‘freaks’ on other teams, like Ngata or Orakpo, only rarely make it into free agency.

Which is my long way of saying, “Yes, we have apparent depth, but we won’t have it for long. And on the D line, we don’t have effective depth even now.”
