WR Sanders Confirms to Steelers Gab – The Offense is Nearly All Brand New

Emmanuel Sanders drags Texans cornerback Jason Allen

Last season in his second season, wide out Emmanuel Sanders had 22 grabs for 288 yards with two touchdowns. He’s going to be expected to do more in year three, and it comes with the development of a new offense, one that is being put in place by new offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

There was a piece yesterday in the Post-Gazette reporting that there’s going to be a huge turnaround in the language of the offense, and it’s going to take quite a bit of time for players to learn it.

Today on Twitter, Sanders said just that much in a Tweet:

To which I tweeted back at him:

do u agree that’s it’s 90 percent different than that of Arians?

To which he Tweeted back at me:

Ouch. I don’t know about everyone else, but the fact that an offense that had quite a bit of success over the past few seasons is changing that much is a little bit scary.

The good news is with no lockout there’s plenty of time for the players and coaches to get on the same page. For some reason though I have nightmares of a Joe Walton offense from back in 1990 going through my head again. And trust me, that’s not good.

Matt, I share you concerns. We didn’t need a complete new offense, we needed better players and execution. My concern is that the learning curve will be so steep we won’t see the improved execution we expect. I remember the Walton years, too.

What concern? The run game has been below average, and at times downright bad, and the passing game relied entirely on big ben improvising…. you would like for that to continue instead actual plays that are designed to break defenses down? Steelers offense last year: screen pass, big ben throwing a bomb, or big ben finding a WR on a broken play after he has to avoid being sacked. 95% different than that sounds completely fantastic!

AHHH the Walton years. Brings back some awful memories huh? No offensive Td’s for about 3 or 4 weeks to start the season. Fortunately, we have more talent than the 1990-ish season, so I don’t expect to go through that kind of drought again. Big Ben is light years ahead of Brister and Dwight Stone is a distant memory. LOL Anyway, glad to see Haley is going to make these players work hard and be accountable for performance. At least thats what i think a new playbook brings to the table.

Anonymous has is right up there. Far too often last year Big Ben went deep and either threw a bubble screen or scrambled too long to make a play. All I’ve been hearing lately that Ben cant run a fluid, quick release offense. I guess ESPN had forgotten about the Tenn and NE games last season. Having Haley here will take Big Ben to the next level as he narrows in on his prime years. The NFL better watch out for the Steelers. I understand that there is a learning curb, but I have great confidence in our guys to get the job done. There is great talent all over the offense now. Fantastic, quick, explosive WRs, solid TE play, hungry RBs trying to get their chance to make an impact, wildcards in Rainey and Batch, and finally Big Ben, a 2-time Super Bowl winning elite QB. Should be a fun year for sure.

Anonymous and George H: I could not agree more with the both of you. The Steelers have gotten by offensively the last few years because of their tremendous talent and not because of their offensive system. I have a feeling that once a solid system is in place with more overall accountability–coupled, of course, with the Steelers talent, which was only enhanced in the draft, particularly in the O line–we are going to see some impressive results.
