Colbert Says Steelers Won’t Reduce Wallace Offer

Kevin Colbert, Steelers GM says he’s not planning to cut the team’s offer to wide receiver Mike Wallace.

Wallace, a restricted free agent who hasn’t signed his contract tender offer of one-year, $2.742 million because he wants a long-term deal, isn’t working out with the team or guaranteed he’ll report to training camp.

Even so, Wallace won’t be docked by the team, which has a mechanism at its disposal granted by the CBA to cut his 2012 salary to $577,500, which is 110 percent of his 2011 base salary.

“That’s never been an intention of ours,” said Colbert, appearing on WXDX-FM in Pittsburgh. “When we tendered Mike at that amount we did, the compensation through the tender, we really had no issue with that whatsoever because he is deserving of that.”

If Wallace does hold out, he’d have to report before the 11th game of the regular season to earn an accrued season toward free agency. He’s reportedly seeking a deal with a value of at least $12 million per season.

I don’t know if this is a bunch of posturing by Wallace and his agent , but I am about to hop off the Mike Wallace bandwagon and say “adios”. Always loved his speed and game breaking ability. What Steeler fan wouldn’t? But, his insistence of a salary comparable to Larry Fitzgerald is insane. I like you, Mike but not that much. You’re just not worth it.

Wallace is cut out of the mold of the contemporary prima donna athlete. Although he is doing everything legally within his power and with due right to negotiate, he doesn’t fit the mold of a hard nosed Pittsburgh Steeler WR! I realize the NFL has gotten expansive with the pass but Wallace runs across the middle hunched over, waiting to duck down to avoid a hit. And, although this might be wise for prolonged productivity, I find it hard to root for! I am not a meathead and am in favor of the NFL doing everything in its power to procure league longevity—especially at the POP warner levels where they seem to be trying to eliminate full contact but once per week. That being said, I like the WR’s who, are big and physical and keep their mouths shut about “feeding their families” if ya know what I mean?! Megatron, Andre Johnson, Fitz, Boldin (even though he’s a *&%!@ Raven), Ward (retired), Reggie Wayne (quietly a tough guy), Miles Austin, Roddy White, Greg Jennings, Colston, all show up, shut up and do their jobs, get paid of course, and when they score a touchdown, the whole world doesn’t have to know about it. This is the mold of the WR I choose to want to root for and Mike Wallace clearly doesn’t fit it in my opinion!
