Steelers Slam Sanchez, Pound Jets 27-10 to Get to 1-1

All week long ESPN, NFL Network and any other sports show gushed about how good the Jets offense was.

This after one game against a bad Bills team, a game where the Bills basically gave the Jets a number of shots via turnovers and poor play by Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Sunday at Heinz Field, the Jets and the rest of the world learned just how good the Jets offense is. Not very.

The Steelers punched the supposed great Jets offense in the mouth, holding average QB Mark Sanchez to his usual poor numbers, and feasting on a Jets defense missing Darrelle Revis in a runaway 27-10 win.

The Steelers offense, a unit no one talked about entering the game, did pretty much as they pleased against the Jets. Ben Roethlisberger passed for 275 yards and two touchdowns, and hit passes all over the field.

Roethlisberger completed 24 of 31 passes, he hit Heath Miller for a 1-yard score to give the Steelers the lead late in the first half, then found Mike Wallace for a 37-yard strike early in the third quarter to break the game open.

Sanchez threw an early TD to former Steeler Santonio Holmes, but after that he and the rest of the offense did little. On the day, the QB threw for 138 yards. He was 10 of 27 passing and was just 6 of 17 in the second half, with two of those completions coming on a last-second stat-padding drive.

The Jets took leads of 7-3 and 10-6 behind their offense while the Steelers took awhile to get comfortable. Sanchez hit Holmes for a 14-yard touchdown pass to cap a 90-yard drive then put together a 12-play, 61-yard march that was capped by Nick Folk’s 38-yard field goal.

The Steelers took the lead late in the half, with Roethlisberger leading them 80 yards in 11 plays, the last one a simple lob to Miller that put the Steelers up 13-10.

New York took over at its 31 after the ensuing kickoff with 57 seconds left before the break. Even though the Jets had two timeouts remaining and decent field position, they chose to sit on the ball, and after that, were never in the game.

The Steelers pounded them in the second half, while their offense had a back breaking 10 plus minute drive that wiped out any chance the Jets had. Issac Redmen wrapped up the TD drive with a spin move for a score to make it 27-10.

That’s how it would end, with the black and gold back to normal, celebrating on the sideline at 1-1 after last weeks loss to the Broncos.

Now, it’s getting ready for the Raiders, a team that is already 0-2, and will be coming off a terrible game in Miami on Sunday.

If the Steelers keep playing as they did today vs the Jets, they will be tough to beat.

A good game plan by Haley, very good adjustments by Lebeau. Running g ame may not look like much right now, but the commitment is there and they are churning out yards when they are needed. The last td drive was proof. Also, lets have Dwyer start, Redman take over the duties he is used to and Rainey work in some snaps. Rainey’s drop on the screen pass was a great call and poor execution on the rookies part! The more we run (even when it doesnt get big yards) the better our screens and passes will be. This team is really headed toward offensive balance in my book.

Well, Matt, the final score was in line with our pre-game expectations, and it’s certainly nice to celebrate a victory. The Ravens loss helped, too. But we still have work to do.

The offense is beginning to execute Halley’s offense properly, with the O-line much improved in pass and run blocking. Ben was considerably better at staying in the pocket and playing within the offense. Ben’s greater discipline not only helps his own efficiency, but that of the line as well. I was especially encouraged by Halley’s continuing to run the ball despite a lack of success early. Now he needs to learn not to run power backs wide. NFL defenses are too fast for Dwyer or Redman to turn the corner. They are much more effective between the tackles. Conversely, running Rainey between the tackles is moronic. That’s like throwing a Swiss watch against a stone wall. Get Rainey the ball out in space where he can use his speed and elusiveness.

The defense remains vulnerable to the run. The Jets ran over our D-line in the first several series, just as the Broncos did. Tebow gashed us for 20 yards and then got pulled. Most of the Jets runs were right up the middle. If Ryan hadn’t abandoned their running attack early, the Jets might have controlled the clock and won the game.

Against the pass, Taylor continues to hold too often; those penalties hurt. Once again, the rush rarely got to Sanchez, despite our attempts to blitz. Hood and McLendon still struggle to get off their blocks. However, Worilds and Heyward have noticeably stepped up. Our over all speed on Defense is impressive. We allow a lot of completions, but we get to the ball in a hurry. And we are getting more turnovers. Under the current pass-happy rules, speed trumps brawn, as we noted often last year. LeBeau got the message and rebuilt the D accordinly.

Finally, a tip of the hat to Drew Butler and Suisham. I’m sorry Kapinos got hurt, but Butler is a superb punter and a great find. Because of him, we won the field position battle in Denver and against the Jets. His ability to drop the ball inside the ten consistently allowed our special teams to down the ball and keep the Jets pinned deep. He is a difference maker. Suisham has improved the distance of his kickoffs and his field goal accuracy. Together, they give us one of the better kicking units in the game.

AGREED GUYS. Special teams will be very important this year. Not that it isnt every year, but with a rebuilding type of defensive outlook, field position is crucial. Booming kickoffs and pinning punts will be the differance in more than a few games this year based on the quality of teams we are facing. I still like the commitment to the run, regardless of flashy numbers. The run will come around. Until then, let Ben use the weapons he has and make some plays. I worry more about defense than offense these days and that hasnt happen many times in my 40+ years of being a Steeler fan! I like the secondary though. I am not down on them as much as some are, I think that Brown/Allen will compliment Lewis with more reps. As long as we are getting wins, those reps are banked away!As for Taylor, I dont think his confidence is shaken, its just his “swaggn”. Whatever, just get some picks! I also like the thought that the d-line is also going to be fine. Kiesel is playing hard and making up for Hamptons current ineffectiveness. McClendon needs to play like he did in August!!

I wanted to mention a new blog you might appreciate: http://brownsfansteelersfan.wordpress.com/.

Two funny writers — an intelligent Steelers fan who is currently posting this comment, and some dude who likes the Browns — are publishing what we deem “perhaps the most unnecessary blog of all time,” Browns Fan Vs. Steelers Fan. If you like a combination of stats, insults, perspective, local sports history, fake poems penned by five-year-olds, sports/talk radio and the occasional goat video, check it out. We could use the support:)
