Rumors That Steelers Will Meet With Brian Urlacher

There are small rumors and grumblings saying that the Steelers will meet with former Chicago Bears inside linebacker, Brian Urlacher. Reportedly, a source close to the All-Pro linebacker says he is to meet with Pittsburgh to discuss possible contract negotiations. The team or Urlacher has not came out and released this information to the public yet, but when it does, Steelers Gab will keep you posted.

The 34 year old Urlacher, played 13 seasons with the Chicago Bears and has never played in the 3-4 defense. If the Steelers were to sign him in the future, I would guess that they would keep him at middle linebacker. Urlacher has battled injuries two out of the past five seasons, and with the Steelers low on money and reportedly still in the race for Elvis Dumervil, I wonder how much they would offer Urlacher?

Would he sign with the team for a one-year minimum salary deal? Or does the eight time pro bowler think he is worth more?

We will keep you posted on the situation. Follow @SteelersGab on Twitter and Like us on Facebook! We are reporting the latest Steelers news as it happens!

Urlacher will finally be healthy, he would excel anywhere the Steelers put him, and I believe as the ultimate team player and teammate he would be a real asset and fit right in with the Steelers..

Urlacher is a top tier athlete and has at least another year or two in him. He is tough and has a Steelers mentality. But he is a power athlete, better suited to the game as it was than as it has become. He isn’t fast enough to cover the new, fleet tight ends and backs on those underneath patterns — the one’s that gave us fits the last two years. The skills required of ILBs have changed, and Urlacher no longer fits the optimal profile. The Bears let him go for a reason, and it wasn’t all about money. If he joins the Steelers it will be on a short contract as a stop gap measure only. He is more likely to wind up on a “have not” team that is willing to pay big bucks to shore up their defensive middle.

Thank you for the comments guys! Love seeing the feedback. Excellent points made by the both of you. If the Steelers were to sign Urlacher, then I would see them as a rotaition and subsitiute to Larry Foote. Bringing a player like Urlacher in would motivate these linebackers. He has had a stellar career and has accomplished himself as one of the premiere MLB’s in the 2000’s.

I don’t mean to always agree with the Doc, but no doubt Urlacher was one of the best ILBs of his day, possibly even better than Lewis, however Urlacher is no longer the athlete he once was. I still think hes a better option than Foote, but those no need to carry another aged linebacker on the roster. If you want to rotate Foote with another ILB, then draft a guy and let him develop. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Urlacher end up in a place like Oakland or Washington, especially if Fletcher retires.

Im sorry , but for a team trying to get younger , signing Urlacher makes no sense . He has been a great player , but hes not the same player he was five years ago .
