A Return To The Steelers Lining Up For Harrison?

While the Ravens have gone out and inked former Broncos LB Elvis Dumervil to a five-year deal, the move could effect the Steelers in a number of ways.

The biggest of which could mean a comeback to one of their own.

Reports from Adam Schefter of ESPN state that James Harrison, who was let go a few weeks back, could come back to the Black and Gold

Schefter says that the linebacker is indeed open to returning to the team that released him on the second Saturday in March (March 9th).

The story goes is that Harrison was set to chat with Baltimore on Sunday, but then the Ravens went out and inked Dumervil, leaving Harrison out in the cold.

Schefter stated Monday on twitter that Harrison’s agent, Bill Parise, said he has not closed the door on his client returning to Pittsburgh, and that he would welcome a call from Steelers.

So what do you think – is it destined that Harrison is back opposite LaMarr Woodley in 2013?

I would of really liked to have brought back the Silver-back, but it appears that Steelers no longer are interested in his services. Its a bit of a shame though, he brings leadership and when healthy Harrison is productive and better than the options we currently have.

I can see why the Steelers FO has decided to move on from Harrison. First, can he stay healthy? I know everyone says hes a young 35 and is in great shape, but the style of football he plays takes a toll on the body. He’s already had knee surgery once and hasn’t been able to play consistently in a while now. We have to face the cold hard facts… Its not 2008 anymore and are beloved veterans that brought us two SBs are on the downside of their careers. Everyone here on this site already knows it and the FO is figuring it out as well.
My second point about not retaining Harrison is the recent track record of our FAs. I’m hesitant to lump Harrison in the same category of Wallace, but I’m thinking the FO is getting tired of offering a fair deal to their players and the players chasing the bigger paycheck. Its an organizational philosophy to not overpay for a player which has been a system that has worked. I also completely understand why players want to make as much as possible due to their brief careers. Its an interesting dichotomy that the Steelers and the fans of their homegrown heroes are facing.

I’m also hearing we have some interest in Freeney as an OLD…I mean OLB. I’m actually not too down on the idea of bringing in Freeney. He has that great ability to get to the qb, however, his age is wearing on him as well. I’m also concerned with his run stopping ability. If I had the choice between Freeney and Worrilds, I might actually lean towards Worrilds due to his youth.

Good analysis, George H. With Harrison, it remains a matter of money. He is no longer a top tier pass rusher. Harrison and Feeney, once among the very best, have both lost a step or two. Worilds is younger, but he has yet to show the strength to bull rush or the quickness to speed rush. If the Steelers bring back Harrison, it will be because the FO was unable to land someone better and will still leave us without the monster pass rusher we need.

The D-line makes GREAT pass rushers..our front 3 is average at best..not one pro bowler in YEARS and it all started going down hill when Aron Smith retired..I feel that has affected Woodleys production besides his hamstrings..Hood reminds me of a 4-3 NT..better suited to rush up the middle..not Athletic enough to play outside..Hampton directly relates to Timmons and Footes production, although they both had good seasons I think its time to get younger at DT..Big Snack says he has some years left and wants to Play still? I see a big paycut or he’ll end up like Harrison..JOBLESS! Keisel still causes chaos but I only see 2 years left for him also. When the Steelers replaced LBs we always had a great one ready to step in..but we also had a good front 3 or 4 even before we changed to the 3-4..We gota get better up front or it won’t matter who’s playin on the outsides
