“Mean” Joe Greene Retires From Steelers Personnel Department

It’s a sad day and a passing of the torch if you will for the Steelers, as first reported by Tribune Review’s Mark Kaboly, Steelers Hall of Famer Joe Greene has retired from teams personnel department.

Following retiring after the 1981 season, Greene eventually joined the Steelers as an assistant coach under Chuck Noll in 1987.

He was one of the men up for the head coaching job when Noll left after the 1991 season, but the job instead went to Bill Cowher.

Overall Greene spent 16 years as an assistant coach with the Steelers, Dolphins, and Cardinals.

In 2004 he left coaching and and was named the special assistant for player personnel for the Steelers, earning two more Super Bowl rings in SB XL and XLIII.

Greene is one of four people outside the Rooney family to have Super Bowl rings from the first six championship teams.

    Mean Joe .What can one say, he deserves all the acholades coming to him.A exceptional player and coach and a good person. If i was living in Pittsburgh i would dearly love to get his autograph for me and my kids. What will he do now i would love to know. Every community would love to have a mean Joe Green. Best for him in the future.

    The legacy began with his arrival in Pittsburgh. Chuck Noll had already assembled the nucleus of a good team, but Joe Green brought an energy and a desire to win that elevated all those around him, plus he had the talent to back it up. He’s the type of inspirational leader the present team needs on D. He transcended the game.

    Mean Joe… if I give you a Coke … will you Throw me a Jersey?

    Those were the Glory Days of the NFL.

    Players didn’t make much money, but they played like thier Life Depended on it.

    And the ‘Nicknames’…Mean Joe, Hacksaw, …even (Dalls player) “Too-Tall’ Jones.

    NFL Lacks that Special Quality it once had with this Era of Players.
