On Friday, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Dri Archer, their third-round pick from the 2014 NFL Draft. Archer, a running back, receiver and special teams return specialist was signed to a four-year contract for a reported $2.7 million over that time.

Archer (5-foot-8, 173) was a standout at Kent State where he rushed for 2,342 yards and 24 touchdowns. Archer added 99 receptions for 1,194 yards and 12 touchdowns. As a specialist, Archer recorded 51 kickoff returns for 1,436 yards and four touchdowns, making his 40 career touchdowns the second-highest in school history with the Golden Flashes. Archer posted the fastest 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis earlier this year.

Archer has spent time during the Steelers’ OTA sessions at running back, wide receiver and returning both punts and kickoffs. His multifaceted talents should instantly boost a poor special teams showing by Pittsburgh over the past two seasons and give quarterback Ben Roethlisberger yet one more offensive weapon to dial up in what is looking like a much quicker offense overall.

Archer’s signing comes just one day after Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey inked a five-year contract extension that makes him the highest paid center in the league at $44 million.

The only 2014 NFL Draft pick not yet signed by the Steelers is Stephon Tuitt (Notre Dame), a defensive lineman who is expected to be offered a contract sometime before minicamp begins next week.
