Steelers release Jordan Dangerfield, sign Kelvin Palmer

Kelvin+Palmer+Baylor+Bears

After initially releasing a Twitter message saying the Pittsburgh Steelers had released safety Jordan Dangerfield and signed offensive tackle “Kevin” Palmer, Steelers PR manager Burt Lauten quickly fixed the facts and reposted.   Indeed, Dangerfield is no longer with the team, but it is former Baylor Bears and most recently Kansas City Chief player Kelvin Palmer that joins the Steelers.

As the Steelers enter training camp, the safety position appeared to have some question marks already.  With Dangerfield removed from the roster, it either indicates that Pittsburgh is ready to bank on Shamarko Thomas or they had a greater need for yet another backup offensive lineman to come in.  The offensive line appears to be a fairly solid unit, begging the question, “Why?”

No further information was given outside of the general announcement.  This story will be one to watch.

Christina, I don’t know “why” either — but let’s take a wild guess. I suspect that the Powers that Be realized Dangerfield was unlikely to make the cut at Safety, whereas Kelvin Palmer might actually have a chance to contribute. The “fairly solid” Steelers O-line has a big fat problem at RT, where Adams and Gilbert have both struggled, especially the former, who is in his make or break year. My guess is that Palmer was brought in to compete with Adams for the backup RT spot. The fact that Palmer was cut by Arizona and KC is no disgrace; both of those teams have depth at OT. Palmer played in a high octane offense at Baylor and earned post-season honors; he just needs time to master NFL blocking techniques. I don’t know if he can unseat Adams, but he is certainly worth a look and he is affordable.

By the way, Palmer also has some experience playing defensive end. I doubt that Tomlin plans to use him in that capacity, but the Steelers do favor players who can contribute in more than one way.
