• Steelers Sign DL Hooks and Philon to Contracts

The Steelers signed defensive linemen Lavon Hooks and Roy Philon to contracts on Monday, Joe Rutter of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

Both players were in training camp last summer with the team. Philon was waived/injured on Aug. 14, and Hooks was released Sept. 3 in the final round of roster cuts.

  • Steelers Release Former Cleveland First-Round Pick CB Justin Gilbert

The Steelers made a move last September adding former Cleveland Browns first-round pick Justin Gilbert to the roster, and in just one season they determined he wasn’t worthy of a roster spot despite his draft status.

Today the team released Gilbert, a player who never lived up to the hype and likely will have a tough time finding future work in the NFL.

Gilbert didn’t do all that much for the Steelers after the Browns traded him to Pittsburgh in a rare inter-divisional move in early September.

He returned some kicks in the postseason for the black and gold, but didn’t do much in terms of their defense and most of the season ended up on the inactive list.

  • Steelers Add Depth to the Practice with Former Bills RB Karlos Williams

    Karlos Williams

    It’s all about depth.

After two postseasons with the likes of Ben Tate and Fitzgerald Toussaint rushing the ball for the Steelers, the team today made a solid roster move, grabbing former Buffalo Bills running back Karlos Williams to the practice squad.

Williams, a fifth round pick out of Florida State in the 2015 NFL Draft, carried 93 times for 517 yards and seven touchdowns in his rookie season.

He’s also a bit of a headache, which is why he’s had a tough time finding work. He was suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season after violating the league’s substance abuse policy, and also early in his career has had weight issues.

The Bills opted to cut Williams in August and he went unclaimed on waivers.

For now, he’s going to find work on the Steelers practice squad, where hopefully he can get things right in his career, and if need be give the Steelers some help down the road if need be.

  • Steelers Release QB Bruce Gradkowski From Injured Reserve

    #5 Bruce Gradkowski

The Steelers career of quarterback Bruce Gradkowski is over, as today the team released the QB from injured reserve, according to ESPN’s Adam Caplan.

Gradkowski is a good guy and deserved better, but in the world of the NFL, if you can’t stay on the field, you can’t help your team, and that’s always been his biggest problem.

Injuries landed Gradkowski on injured reserve last month after he tore his hamstring. He also spent all of 2015 on IR with issues with his shoulder and hand.

He was brought back to the team in May after first joining the team in 2013. He will end his tenure with the black and gold never attempting a pass in a regular season game.

In his career he’s thrown for 4,057 yards, 21 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.

  • Steelers Put TE Ladarius Green on PUP List; Won’t Play Till at Least Week Seven

The Steelers won’t have the services of offseason pickup tight end Ladarius Green for the first few weeks of the season, as today the team placed him on the PUP list.

Green has been a bust thus for the Steelers, a player they were hoping would be able to step in for the retired Heath Miller. So far Green hasn’t participated in workouts with the team.

He inked a four-year, $20 million contract this offseason, and was handed a $4.75 million dollar signing bonus. He won’t be eligible to return until after Week 6, so the earliest he can play will be the Week 7 matchup against the Patriots at Heinz Field.

Green wasn’t the only news for the black and gold on Tuesday, as the team also released safety Jacob Hagen, defensive tackle Devaunte Sigler and cornerback Kevin White.

The Steelers will have more moves to make later this week, as all teams must reduce their rosters to 53 players by Saturday, Sept. 3 at 4 p.m.
