Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been named the AFC’s Offensive Player of the Week, the team announced on Wednesday. Despite wearing a special shoe to protect his sprained left foot, Roethlisberger completed 24-of-34 pass attempts for 228 yards and five touchdowns in the Steelers’ 38-17 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. For Roethlisberger, it was the second time in his career where he’s thrown five touchdowns in a single-game.

Our former Offensive Coordinator, Ken Wisenhutt, realized it early: Ben is far more productive when he plays within the offense instead of freelancing. Yes, Ben makes big plays when he scrambles and throws deep repeatedly, but it comes at a price that is not always good for the team.
Wisenhutt kept Ben within the offense through play calling and coaching discipline. Last week, Ben’s injury forced him to do so. Notice how the much maligned O-line was suddenly able to sustain blocks in pass coverage? When Ben doesn’t hold the ball or scramble into the defense, the O-line can do its job. The results speak for themselves.
But when Ben’s foot heals and he can freelance again, will Arians have the courage to restrain his impulses, or will he let Ben revert to style? I’m hoping that Tomlin will provide the discipline, for the good of the team. Big QB stats are not always consistent with team success. Lesson learned?
