The 09 Jets and the 05 Steelers – Similar Teams Taking the Long Way to the Super Bowl

While watching the final game of the playoff weekend yesterday, I began to think about how much the Jets of 2009 look somewhat similar to the Steelers from 2005 and their run through the playoffs which of course included a Super Bowl title.

The Jets have already taken care of the Bengals in Cincy, something the Steelers did that year as well, and yesterday shocked the Chargers after trailing 7-0 they came back and scored 17 second half points to win 17-14 to advance to the AFC Title game in Indy this Sunday.

Now the Jets offense isn’t anything to write home about, more so in the passing game than the running game. They do have two solid backs in Thomas Jones and Shone Greene, who has had two 100+ yard playoff games already.

Mark Sanchez threw for just 100 yards yesterday and a TD, but at the same time isn’t making huge mistakes and most rookie QB’s make. The defense to me really is the story. They are stuffing the run, like that 05 Steelers team did, and getting to the QB, again, like that 05 unit.

Of course history for the Jets may be done once Peyton Manning and the Colts get to them on Sunday at home, but something tells me if I was a betting man, I would be taking the Jets plus the 7.5 points that Vegas currently has them getting.

On the other side, is there another team in the AFC that describes the word ‘choke’ more than the San Diego Chargers? They run off 12 straight wins, only to lose at home to a Jets team that no one (minus myself who picked New York to win) gave much of a shot to. Philip Rivers once again didn’t play all that great when he needed to, and what happened to Darren Sproles? Oh well, another season done for the Dolts, while I think the AFC title game is going to be interesting to say the least.

I understand that their are some similarities, but in my opinion the 05 Steelers are heads above the 09 Jets. First of all the Jets got in at 9-7, the Steelers got in at 11-5. The previous season the Jets and Favre were 9-7 and missed the playoffs while the Steelers went 15-1 and made it to the AFC title game. The 05 Steelers had a Hall of Famer in Jerome Bettis and Hines Ward and Troy Polamalu are headed their too. The current Jets have no one of this caliber except maybe former Steeler Alan Faneca.I am not taking away anything from the Jets. They have been great. I would love to see them beat Indy too. Just like the Steelers did in 05!

Mark, besides Jets fans, u are the only one that wants to see the J-E-T-S beat Indy. Seriously, if Indy makes it to the SB, than it doesnt matter who they play. Its going to be one of the most intriguing SBs in recent history.

Scenario 1: Manning vs Favre. Both are the face of the NFL and get the most media exposure in the league. Both can be arguably the best qb ever. Favre has all the records; Manning will eventually have all the records.

Scenario 2: Manning vs City of New Orleans. The Saints will always be the underdog in this scenario. The city is still trying to recover from a tragedy and is desparate for a win, figuratively and literally. The Saints are historically a terrible team and will truly be a story of From Rags to Riches. Drew Brees was tremendous in college at Perdue but slipped to the 2nd round because everyone thought he was too short. Then at SD he was sent packing to make room for Rivers, if anything Drew Brees needs a big win to solidify himself as an elite qb.

I dont want to discredit the Jets for the job they have done thus far, but they are a boring team to watch and only have one star IMO, Revis. Although, I really wont be surprised to see the Jets beat the Colts. Indy has to rely on the pass way too much, and the Jets have been eating up that type of team. On the other hand, Sanchez is having the weight of the world placed upon him, even though Rex wont admit it. If the Jets do in fact upset the Colts, I think most of America will be quite disappointed.
