Could the Interest be Real in Signing Plaxico Burress?

Gary Myers of the New York Daily News has heard that the Eagles will eventually be first in line to sign former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress, but there’s also speculation the Steelers, Chargers, Falcons and Ravens could also be interested.

At the Super Bowl this year, Steelers WR Hines Ward endorsed the return of Burress to Pittsburgh, where he spent the first five years of his career before signing with the Giants. Ward is a terrific player, but he does not make the Steelers’ personnel decisions.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and coach Andy Reid, having already been through the post-prison experience with Vick, might be in a better position to handle any public backlash about adding another former inmate. They could also help Burress with his transition back to the NFL. Putting Burress with DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin would give Vick plenty of options.

The Chargers have also been mentioned as a landing spot for Panthers WR Steve Smith, but if they can’t land him, they could jump in the sweepstakes for Burress.

The Steelers chose not to re-sign Burris when he was at the top of his game — so why would they want him now? The problems Burris would create in Pittsburgh are far greater than his current talent. The Daily New is merely passing off rumor as news to fill space during the off-season. Who will their sports writers have us pursuing next, Ochocinco? Get real.

I could not agree more Dr. George! I mean, really, really??? We do need players but why not go after signing D-backs or a fleet of foot running back or another interior D-lineman (Alan Branch–could also double as a nose tackle)—and, with all this speculation about this team or that team (Philly for example) being able to rehab someone’s (supposedly former) “thuggish” mindset, why not us jump in to a more realistic sweepstakes and talk about how we can motivate (Alan Branch or the like) to be motivated to play?!? Plaxico is yesterday’s news.
