The National Football League is working on a plan that would fine NFL teams if there players incur multiple fines for violations of player safety rules, Greg Bedard of The Boston Globe reports.
Bedard adds that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would like to have the plan put in place for the 2011 season.
NFL vice president Adolpho Birch says the fines would be to create accountability at the club level for preventing flagrant hits, and that in addition to monetary punishment, teams could possibly be stripped of draft choices.
According to Dan Parr of Pro Football Weekly, Steelers owner Art Rooney says that had the proposed plan been in place for 2010, his team would have qualified for a fine. Steelers linebacker James Harrison received around $100,000 in fines during the 2010 season.
