“Goodell must go”? It’s a nice thought, but it isn’t going to happen. As I understand it, it would take 24 of the 32 owners to vote him out. As long as the stands are full and TV revenues keep going up, Goodell’s job is secure. The Ray Rice PR gaffe is not enough to get him fired. Indeed, most of the owners are grateful to Goodell for being the lightning rod that spares them public scorn over hot issues like domestic violence, sexual assault, brain injury, and the other misadventures that befall young athletes with too much money and too little judgment.

What I have yet to hear is the more substantive argument that Goodell has ruined football itself, through rule changes that have fundamentally changed the game. What we see today on Sunday is not football as it was played when Terry Bradshaw and Mean Joe Green wore the black and gold; and it is a far cry from the game played by Otto Graham, Sammy Baugh, Bronco Nagurski, and the early legends of the game. Just as NBA basketball today is a parody of that sport.

The truth is college football and basketball are better spectator events and more fun to watch than their professional equivalents, which are for all intents and purposes little more than advertising venues, not sports. Professional football is now financially dependent on TV revenues, derived from corporate advertisers; the dollar and voice of the fans count for little these days; and the status quo won’t change so long as sponsors believe they are getting value for the money spent. All of which is good for the franchise owners and for Roger Goodell — and very bad for fans and the game of football itself.

I agree , at the end of the day , I dont see Goodell being fired , but at the same time there has to be some form of accountability in this as well . This whole situation was as badly mishandled as anything in recent memory . For Goodell to say they never saw the full video from inside the elevator and could not get access to it , is simply not truthful . If TMZ could get access to it , then I know NFL security with all their former cops and security people on the payroll could have accessed it as well . Bottom line , if you truly didnt know , then you should have done whatever was necessary to get the tape and thats where the league and Roger dropped the ball . It happened on your watch Roger and now you own it .
