On Thursday, it was announced that the Pittsburgh Steelers had signed outside linebacker Shayon Green to their offseason roster. Green went undrafted in 2014 and later signed with the Miami Dolphins out of the University of Miami where he played defensive end. The Dolphins released Green, providing the Steelers with an opportunity to fill a much-needed roster position.
Green started all 13 games on the defensive line for the Miami Hurricanes his senior year (2013) and finished his collegiate football career with 25 consecutive starts at defensive end where he recorded 68 tackles, three sacks and a team-best 10.5 tackles-for-a-loss. Green was presented with the Melching Leadership Award at the end of the season as well as the Captain’s Award.
In 2012, Green was the ACC’s 2012 Brian Piccolo Award Co-Winner after leading the Hurricanes with 67 tackles. He was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player at the team’s banquet to mark the end of the season.
Green battled injuries during his 2009 (true freshman) and 2011 (sophomore) seasons and played in two spring practice games at middle linebacker as a redshirt freshman (2010).
Rivals.com rated Green the No. 65 weakside defensive end prospect in the nation after he recorded 125 tackles, two sacks and five forced fumbles as a high school senior. Green was an All-Class All-State honorable mention and earned honorable mention Class 5A All-State by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Nationally, Green was ranked the No. 102 defensive end by ESPN.com and No. 122 by Scout.com.

On the Steelers’ roster, Green is projected as a 6’1″ 255 lb. LB. When healthy, he was enormous ability and a desire to excel. He had two ACL injuries at Miami and went undrafted. I have no knowledge of his current physical condition, but I stand in awe of what the Steelers’ conditioning staff did for Sean Spence. If they can work another miracle with Green, this signing could be a real steal. Signing Green for modest money is a risk well worth taking.
