Steelers Make Roster Moves to Get Down to 53; Essex and Kapinos Gone

The Steelers, following their win over the Panthers on Thursday, announced their roster moves today to get the roster down to 53.

The first move was an obvious on, putting rookie linebacker Sean Spence on their Reserve/Injured List. Spence was hurt in the Thursday win, hurting his left knee.

Two vets that were waived were OL Trai Essex and punter Jeremy Kapinos (Waived/Injured List). The punting job will be handled by Drew Butler to start the year.

The other 19 players released include defensive backs Damon Cromartie-Smith, Terrence Frederick and Josh Victorian, linebackers Brandon Hicks and Marshall McFadden, defensive linemen Corbin Bryant, Igbinosun Ikponmwosa and Jake Stoller, quarterback Jerrod Johnson, running back DuJuan Harris, wide receivers Tyler Beiler, Toney Clemons, David Gilreath, Marquis Maze and Derrick Williams, and offensive linemen Ryan Lee, John Malecki and Chris Scott.

So is Rainey going to be used as our 5th receiver?

Apparently, he will be — when Halley uses a 5-receiver set; frequently, he will use a 4-receiver set, with Rainey as a check down lining up in the back field, according to some pundits, to give more run-pass flexibility.

I think the team will soon regret cutting some of these guys. I realize you can’t keep everyone you like, but there a ton of guys I would have kept over Beachum, who seems to have inherited Kemoeatu’s holding propensities along with his number.

You might want to re think letting Trai Essex go . The guy can play guard , tackle or center . Thats pretty versatile in todays NFL .
