Ben’s on the block – for the right price

It’s been the hot topic for the past week in Pittsburgh and around the NFL, and it seems like finally it’s official – Ben’s on the block – for the right price. The Post-Gazette reports that if a team comes with something big, and we’re talking a couple first-round picks, and possibly a player, then Ben may be available.

While they are expecting to learn tomorrow what punishment quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will receive from National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell, the Steelers have received trade feelers from other teams and have not ruled out the possibility of dealing their two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback, the Post-Gazette has learned. It is not believed the Steelers are actively seeking to trade Roethlisberger, nor are they close to doing what they did with Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes, who was traded for a fifth-round pick to the New York Jets because the team was planning to release him anyway. Nonetheless, the possibility Roethlisberger could be traded, provided the price is right, is not being discounted by the team.

I still have a hard time seeing this team entering the 2010 season with anyone other than Roethlisberger as the starting QB. Yes, they went out and grabbed former backup Byron Leftwich on Tuesday for a 7th round pick, but he’s not the long-term answer. And yes, Dennis Dixon is around, but again, he’s not ready. It would have to be one heck of an offer, and a real eye towards the future to move Roethlisberger.

Like this is what I wanted to wake up to! I am starting to get physically ill from the speculation. Please come right out and say either way. I want him back, but I also want this over with!

The Steelers are just playing the game. Ben isnt going anywhere but they still need to keep an open ear. I am so sick of hearing about Ben trades…. I was happy to see Faneca on the block but then I scroll down and see this story. Keep Big Ben, grab Faneca and draft a first rd o-linemen and were back in business. I know we still need to sure up the defense but this would be a start.

This whole he said / she said soap opera is just another example of a mega-talented & mega-pampered athlete living his celebrity lifestyle. He’s surrounded by both a bunch of yes-men and others who want to get at his $$$. Hopefully, this will bring him down to earth and help him grow up. Here’s a parody song that sheds some humor on the whole mess.

The magic phrase in the P-G article is “provided the price is right.” Trading Ben is the flip side of the Jets shopping Faneca –it’s all about eliminating a huge contract, if you can, to make room for other talent that will help strengthen the team. If the Steelers could get rid of the entire $65 million liability and gain two first round picks in the bargain, it would be a done deal. But all the bidders want a bargain. The Steelers are not willing, apparently, to eat part of the $65 million, and no team to date is willing to pay full price. A deal for Ben may actually be easier to make after the draft, if certain teams fail to get their QB of the future. “Attention K-mart Shoppers.”

Steelers trade Big Ben… there goes their season and next few seasons. It would be the dumbest thing they could do. I may root for whoever they traded him to. And I’m a diehard Steelers person.

I dont think the Steelers will trade Ben. One simple reason, it took them almost 30 yrs to win another Super Bowl. Without him it will take another 3o yrs to win another. The Rooneys are not that stupid. If they do they know they better get another great qb in the early stages of the draft. At least 2nd rd. Like Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow will be their in that round.
