Former Steeler OG Fancea on the block; want him back?

Just ran across this and thought it would make for some interesting talk the day before the draft. Seems that former Steeler All-Pro guard Alan Faneca is in danger of being let go by the Jets if they can’t find a trading partner for him.

Now just like most of you I saw a couple Jets games a season ago, but I didn’t hear nor watch Faneca all that closely to see if his skills have gone all that much backwards. In any case, here’s the tidbit on it:

The Jets have been quietly shopping Pro Bowl offensive guard Alan Faneca for several weeks, league sources said. If they can’t find a taker during the draft, the Jets could release the 32-year-old lineman and his $7.5 Million salary. Coach Rex Ryan, speaking Tuesday night to reporters, sidestepped questions on whether Faneca is in danger of being released or traded.

Sure he’s got a huge salary after he cashed in after leaving the Steelers a few years back, but man, it would be a welcome addition to an O-line that is still looking for help. What do you all think?

Add Faneca immediately. Trade a 5th rd pick for him. Hes only 32 and has a few years left. Also take an O-Linemen in the first rd and that will sure up the o-line. Plus Faneca is a great team player and knows the system. The Steelers are desperate to gain some fan favor back and bringing back Faneca would help by leaps and bounds.

No way!! We let him walk because he wasn’t all that. Why you think the Jets are going to release? Because he just isn’t that good. Period.

Yes, but not at his present salary. Let the Jets cut him loose; then the Steelers could negotiate a new contract well south of $7.5 million per year, if he can pass the physical. His skills may have deteriorated, but he is a better guard than anyone the team has now, and he knows the system. He would solidify the left side of the O-line and provide needed leadership. It appears the Jets are shopping him because of his salary, not because he isn’t a quality player.
