How About Flozell Adams?

Have been hearing some rumblings today about OL Flozell Adams being on hand at Steelers headquarters. Yes, the former Cowboys OL has been seen at the building, obviously talking to the team about coming aboard after the injury Monday to Willie Colon.

Adams was released by the Cowboys on April 2nd of this year, after playing for them since the 1998 season when he was drafted by Dallas.

He is a five-time Pro Bowl selection, and just back in 2007 was an All-Pro. He 6’7, 338 pounds, and has played in 177 career games, starting 173.

So what do you think? A fit for the black and gold, a team that now needs a tackle after the incident to Colon on Monday?

This could be a good win-win for a short term contract. At 35, Adams isn’t going to get a long term deal and he has to think about wanting to go to a team that can contend. (Reportedly the other team interested in him is Denver, but they are in full rebuilding mode).

This would have been a no-brainer only a few years ago. Now, it depends on how much he has left in the tank. Adams was the real deal once, but the Cowboys axed him for a reason. Is he better than the younger guys we already have? I don’t know. I’ll trust the coaches to figure out that conundrum. But whether he warrants a short term contract (as Arrow suggests above) or not, I am encouraged that the Steelers are taking a look at all options. See my note on the Colon article below. A quality stop-gap OT is essential if we hope to contend this year.

The only bad part about Adams is that he is going to be called offsides about 30+ times this season. However Adams is going to be better than any other option.

I have to agree with the people above that Adams is well past his prime. However, beggars can’t be choosers……and I wasn’t impressed with the Steelers O-line before the injury to Colon (who has consistently been the best player on the line since Faneca left).
Will Adams be as good as Colon was? ……Probably not. However, I do think he is a better short term solution than Trai Essex or Ramon Foster.

Essex started four games at left tackle in 2005, his rookie season. Both he and Starks played well together, and if you recall the Steelers went 11-5 and won Super Bowl XL that year. I suggest they move Essex to tackle, and start Maurkice Pouncey to guard. Remember that in 1988 the Steelers started Dermontti Dawson at guard to learn from Mike Webster for a year, I like the way that worked out. I motion that they employ the same strategy this year.

I wouldn’t count out Foster…The Steelers brass have the same impression/opinion of him that they had of Colon when he came into the league and he ended up starting right away and getting better each year. I am interested to see how the new O-Line coach and free agent RT (both from Buffalo) congeal together…I am also interested in the rookie tackle from Tennessee (recently injured). Either way, I am confident that the Steelers front office realizes that this is still a Super Bowl Caliber team and will make the right decisions (I mean, it’s scary almost…Colon was due to get a Long-Term contract extension and the Steelers delayed and now he gets a (potential career ending) serious injury!?! It’s like they know stuff about players and have incredible, God-Given intuition about things that are football-related.
