There was some talk this last week about the Steelers cutting ties with offensive lineman Flozell Adams, as Adam Schefter of ESPN says that Adams will not make $5 mil next season with the team.
While that may still be true, team president Art Rooney II says that the veteran offensive tackle is in the team’s plans for 2011. The 35-year-old may be on the downside of his career, but he had some solid moments on a line that still took a beating in the media during the teams Super Bowl run.
Although the Steelers have not yet announced the restricted free agent tenders they have given their players, Rooney said all eligible players received tenders: tackles Willie Colon and Tony Hills, quarterback Dennis Dixon, cornerback William Gay and tight end Matt Spaeth.

Retaining Adams, Dixon, and Hills is surprising from a football perspective. It makes sense only in financial terms and reflects a spirit of austerity bordering on parsimony — unless, of course, the money is not guaranteed. The same spirit may have moved management to retain Arians for 1 year. These decisions are all consistent with the theme discussed earlier of trying to make one more run for the trophy before the team is forced to rebuild — but it’s asking a lot of some aging and injury-prone athletes.
However, these are all offensive moves. If we are saving money on offense in order to use it to rebuild the defense for the coming season, then it all makes perfect sense. I hope that’s the case. A dominant defense and an average offense could still win it all. Until we see the other side of this coin, the jury is still out.
