Five Changes That Could Help The Steelers Get Better

Timmons

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review sports columnist and TribLIVE Radio has some ideas about some of the changes that the Steelers can make to try and get better.

Some thoughts on the changes:

1. Ben calls plays – Love this idea, as the offense has been at its best when they are in the two-minute drill and Ben is running the show.

2. Troy back off box – Let’s face it, the move that resulted in a few highlight plays earlier in the season now appears to be nothing more than a liability. He’s either offsides on plays, or opponents have gotten wise to the play.

3. Cortez > Gay – William Gay is the whipping boy on defense for this team, and for good reason as he’s just not very good. Time to get Allen back in if he’s at or near 100 percent.

4. More Shamarko – Not sure about this, as last week vs the Pats he was killed all day trying to keep up with TE Rob Gronkowski. If the team thinks Thomas is a big part of the future, they will play him more, but they should tread lightly.

5. Find ILB who can free up 94 – Good luck on this one, as now sure what player on the roster or sitting out in free agency is going to help all that much at this point. If they can find one to help Timmons, it would be a huge asset.

I respect your opinion; you are eminently more qualified than any fan. That doesn’t, however, exclude fans from having opinions. If they didn’t, then what good is it in being a fan.

    My top five changes:

    1. Tell Mike Tomlin to stop threatening layoffs (steel town vernacular) and benchings. His public indictments, not only lessen his face value to the public, and without question doesn’t endear his team to want and follow. Leaders motivate; don’t castigate.

    2. Send Kevin Colbert to the Art Institute of Pittsburgh to learn how to draw up better draft choices.

    3. Ask Troy Polamalu to stop openly crossing himself; it doesn’t give his teammates much faith in the team. (Don’t write me letters, it just a joke. Are you laughing yet?)

    4. Hire laid off Dallas Cheerleaders…there’s enough cap room to bring some life to the depressed faithful.

    5. Let season ticketholders where masks to hide their true identity. Nationally televised games like to zoom in all fan’s faces.

If the Steelers want to have a productive offense that can consistently move the ball up and down the field , two things must happen . One , is this team MUST find a quality left tackle than can protect their franchise quarterback . Kelvin Beachum and cast off Levi Jones are definitely not the answer . Second , they need speed at the wide reciever position . They lost it when Mike Wallace left and they must get it back . Brown and Sanders dont scare anyone as far as speed is concerned . The defense is a whole different situation .This defense needs rebuilt from the ground up . With the exceptions of Cameron Heyward , Jarvis Jones , Lawrence Timmons and Woodley this defense needs completely reworked . Ike Taylor , William Gay , Ryan Clark and yes , Troy Polamalu need to go . Clark and Polamalu have been great players for a long time but like all great players , father time has caught up with them .They cant cover down the field anymore . I remember seeing hall of famer Mel Blount go through the same thing at the end of his career . Its sad but it happens . With that being said , this entire secondary needs replaced and thats not going to happen in one off season , its going to take time .

Tomlin and his goofy euphemisms make me sick. The
only reason he’s still around is because the Rooney’s sacred Rooney Rule of hiring moinorities. The only reason for Tomlin’s earlier success, is because he inherited a very good young team from Cowher. Why is it that the Patriots can lose player after player, year after year, and YET be a contender? Because they have a GM and a coach that can find talent. If the Rooney’s were smart, they would clean house at the end of the season, bring in Bill O Brien from PSU. Woodley got the money and got fat, Troy is old and slow just like Clark, there are only two players on this defense LT and Cam Heyward. They need a stout nose tackle. On Offense, I love Big Ben and Levon Bell,Heath Miller and Antonio Brown. Di Castro is too fragile, Adams is a bust, who knows where the Hernandez investigation will land Maurkice.
