Four observations from day two of Steelers training camp

Tomlin Talk

Following the day’s activities, Tomlin met with the media and started off with the following statement:

It was a good start today. No real injuries to speak of, just general good hustle and enthusiasm. Obviously we’re not perfect. We’re not going to be. It’s a good base to begin. We’ll continue to do similar things in terms of how we structure our work and compete. We do it hard and in a professional manner. That’s what we’re seeking. We have a lot of young guys out there. We’re challenging and evaluating them, but we’re teaching them at the same time. I thought they did a good job of receiving the message and instruction.

Tomlin had the team begin with two-point conversion drills on Sunday, similar to how the team practiced in offseason camps.  Tomlin addressed questions about the start by saying, “We’ve been doing it for over a year because we realize that on both sides of the ball that’s a significant space on a significant down.”  On Sunday, it was the players on defense that won the battle.  Tomlin reiterated that the focus is to establish a solid work foundation and then increase the tempo of drills as camp extends.

Tomlin held James Harrison and Will Allen out of practice.  When asked about it, Tomlin said, “I’m going to protect (James) from himself.  He and Will Allen are too old to be working right now.”  It was a tongue-in-cheek statement as both players have shown a deep dedication to preparing their bodies for practice and the season ahead.  The move is likely one to allow both players to transition into camp activities once basic kinks are worked out in order to prevent unnecessary injury.
