Butler to Talk to Colts About Their Defensive Coordinator Spot

Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler is expected to become the Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

Ed Bouchette, who provides outstanding coverage of the Steelers for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports that Butler will interview on Tuesday, but it’s not a done deal.

Butler has spent the last nine seasons with the Steelers and was thought to be the heir apparent to Dick LeBeau as Pittsburgh’s defensive coordinator. The Steelers have blocked Butler from interviewing for coordinator positions in the past, but Butler’s contract in Pittsburgh is expiring on February 15 and LeBeau has already said that he’s returning for 2012. The Steelers have granted Butler permission to interview with the Colts.

Butler and Colts head coach Chuck Pagano were position coaches with Browns from 2001-02.

With the Colts hiring Pagano and soon adding Butler, it’s pretty clear that the Tampa-2 defense will be replaced with an aggressive 3-4 scheme.
