TE Spaeth Leaves Practice With Injury; Later With Ice Taped To Foot

Matt Spaeth

With Heath Miller still on the PUP list, the Steelers Wednesday lost another tight end, at least for the time being, with injury.

Matt Spaeth, who came over to the team back from the Bears this last offseason, was hurt in Wednesday’s practice in Latrobe.

Reports say that the tight end was carted off the field with an undisclosed injury, and later Bob Labriola from Steelers.com said he had ice taped to his foot.

Last season the 29-year-old appeared in all 16 games with the Bears, starting eight games, catching eight passes.

He played his first four seasons with the Steelers before going to Chicago for the last two. With the Steelers he scored five TD’s in those four seasons.

Right now Spaeth is the starting TE, but if he’s down for any length of time, the nod will go to last years 7th round pick David Paulson.

The team also has Jamie McCoy, Peter Tuitupou and John Rabe on the roster at the TE spot, but losing Spaeth along with the uncertain time frame for Miller might make the new zone blocking scheme tough for the black and gold.
