Memorial Day, a weekend that many people use to celebrate in various ways.  A federal holiday in the United States, it is also a time to remember men and women who’ve served  in the armed services and are passed on.  While most Pittsburgh Steelers fans show honor to their team, there are an extra few that take honor to a new level – those who have shown a courageous love towards their country, their neighbors and family and those of us who are able to enjoy our freedoms, including the freedom to enjoy football games, tailgating, free speech and much, much more.  Today, we at Steelers Gab show our support by highlighting how Steelers players and fans have gone the extra mile and thank all who have served for being willing go give all so we can enjoy what we have.  We also take a moment of quiet reflection to thank those who gave all.  Thank you.

Military service and the comforts of home

Those who serve and have served in the military face more than just danger.  They face being far from home, a life without family members surrounding them – typically in a foreign land – where they put their lives on the line.  A care package that may take weeks to arrive is precious, as are simple things like a family photo and reminders of home.

While many Steelers fans remember the service of the great Rocky Bleier during the conflict in Viet Nam and other NFL players who served during World War II and in Korea, they often do not know the stories of so many of their fellow fans in ‘Steelers Nation’.  These fan soldiers have pride in where they are from and many have decorated their vehicles with stickers and ‘Terrible Towels’ to remind of the joy and comforts of home.

To illustrate this, I conducted several short interviews with Steelers fans who are veterans or currently serving.  I am honored to be able to call those that participated friends and fellow fans.  And their stories are uplifting as well.

My biological uncle in my dad’s side served in Viet Nam and was killed in action. Being from the Pittsburgh area, one thing my uncle would ask about in the few letters he sent home was always how the Steelers were doing and the Pirates too. I was pretty young but I have never forgotten how much I looked up to him. I continue to look up to him. RIP Uncle Rodney – USMC
