Report: Steelers To Ink QB Michael Vick

New York Jets v Miami Dolphins

With the NFL season less than three weeks away, the Steelers are on the verge of bringing in one of the most controversial players in the history of the league, that being QB Michael Vick.

TMZ reports that Vick, who was in prison for his role in a dog fighting scheme (Bad Newz Kennels), has met with the Steelers brass today and hopes to ink with the club by the end of the day.

Our Vick sources tell us … the QB had received “multiple offers” from NFL teams, including the Steelers — but he really liked what Pittsburgh is bringing to the table.

Vick flew out to the Steel City this morning to meet with the team.

The QB beat the Steelers last season as a member of the Jets, and played well in that game, going 10-for-18 for 132 yards and two scores and no picks, and he also ran for 39 yards in that Jets 20-13 win.

What his role with the Steelers would be is totally up in the air, but with the injury to Bruce Gradkowski the team does need a player who can back up Ben Roethlisberger.

No matter what, Vick’s presence on the team will bring a lot of attention to it.

Vick’s criminal past is behind him, and we should be content to leave it there. Even so, unlike the Legursky signing, this rumored signing makes no sense. Although Vick is an experienced NFL starter, the Steelers offense is built around Ben R., a pocket passer; Vick at QB would limit play calling to shotgun type formations because Vick can’t see over NFL linemen, and he is no longer fast enough to outrun linebackers. In a few days, roster cuts will make two or three experienced QBs available who are pocket passers. I’d rather sign one of them.

For this to be happening , the Steelers must be really concerned about Gradkowski’s injury . Its obviously worse than was feared with the shoulder getting no better and now the dislocated finger . Its sounds almost like a desperation move on the Steelers part . As far as Vick is concerned , I dont condone his past for a second . It was then and it is now , in a word sickening . However , he did pay his debt and he has the right to move on with his life . If he can come in , learn the system and be a solid backup to Ben , I have no problem with it . We have to have a reliable backup to Ben and Landry Jones is definitely not the answer .
