Steelers Sign Undrafted Michigan State Punter Aaron Bates

The Steelers have inked a second punter to the roster, bringing in Aaron Bates, who punted for Michigan State, was inked as the teams 19th rookie free agent

Veteran Daniel Sepulveda is an unrestricted free agent, and if he gets an offer he could move on, leaving a hole for the Steelers at the punter spot.

Bates will join Jeremy Kapinos, who punted for the Steelers last season after an injury to Sepulveda, on their roster heading to training camp Thursday.

Sepulveda has had major injury issues in his career, as he missed the final four games of the regular season and the entire post-season last year after his second torn ACL during his time with the Steelers and his third since 2006. He missed the entire 2008 season with the same injury. He also had a torn ACL in the spring of his final season at Baylor.

Reading tea leaves and speculating about NFL roster moves both have the same level of validity, namely none — but it looks like Bates is being hired as insurance in support of Kapinos, who performed well last year. As I read this move, the Steelers are going forward without Sepulveda due his susceptibility to debilitating injury and, perhaps, his projected salary.

IN retrospect if there’s been a HORRIBLE Tomlin era draft pick, it is Sepulveda; I mean 4th round for a guy (PUNTER!!!!) who’s been injured and who you’re not even going to resign!!!!!

Sepulveda is one of the best Punters in the game when hes healthy… The only problem is that hes never healthy. You cant say he was a draft bust because your 4th round pick cant stay on the field. I’ll personally miss him, he would crush the ball and actually make tackles on special teams. Seemed like a good team guy and a hard worker

C’mon, dude, I know it’s hard to argue with Pittsburgh’s success but you can’t be a constant homer! Sepulveda hasn’t fit the bill for someone drafted in the 4th round of 2007 or else they’d be resigning him! If you take a punter in the fourth round, then he better be your guy for the next 5-10 years!
