5. Bettis run for a 43-yard score early in the season vs the Buccaneers
Tampa Bay was one of those teams in Bettis’ career that he seemed to love to face. They had big bad players like Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks, and it seemed to bring out the best in ‘The Bus.’
On October 21st 2001 the Steelers sat at 3-1 after a somewhat upset win the week before against the Chiefs on the road. They underdogs going to Tampa, but controlled the Bucs in all three phases.
Bettis wore down Tampa, and leading 7-3 early in the third quarter he put a dagger in the Bucs. He went through a gaping hole, and raced 43 yards for a score that put the Steelers up 14-3 in a game they would go on to win 17-10.
Fired up, Bettis on the sidelines told any camera he could find – ‘they wanted me, they got me’ talking smack to a Bucs defense that got a full dose of what Bettis was all about.
