2. Bettis Bounces off Buffalo Early in the 1996 Season
By week three of the 1996 season, Steeler fans still were not really sure of all they had when it came to Bettis, as he had a very average game in the opener in a loss to the Jaguars, rushing for 57 yards, and the next week put up 116 yards in a win over the Ravens at home.
On a national stage in week three on a Monday night against the Bills, ‘The Bus’ had his coming out party against a Bills D that didn’t have any answers for the Hall of Fame back.
Bettis helped the Steelers to a 10-3 lead in the second quarter, but his best run was yet to come. On a handoff from QB Mike Tomczak from the Bills 43, Bettis bounced off two Bills defenders who were sure they had him stopped, and was able to stay on his feet to race the distance for a score.
The run showed off the best in Bettis, the ability to break tackles, bounce off lighter defenders, and most importantly stay on his feet and keep the play alive.
After that night the season belonged to Bettis, as he helped the team march to a 10-6 record, an AFC Central Title, and season in which he amassed 1431 yards and 11 scores.
