Mike Tomlin should be on the hot seat right now. His two roles with this team is not only to coach the team on and off of the field but to manage them. There still has been no good response from Tomlin or defensive backs coach Carnell Lake about the real reason Brandon Boykin hasn’t seen more playing time beyond saying that the guys that were already on the field were playing well. Hey coach, those guys are not playing well. Why not be a proper manager and send Boykin out on the field in place of Blake? Wait…was Boykin even ‘active’ for the game? Why not make a halftime adjustment that would give the corners and safeties a heads up on where they were going to get burned in the second half if they didn’t make a move?
Tomlin and this coaching staff have used deflection instead of addressing real issues. This defense is eroding at a time when the Steelers, as a team, need them to be at their best. The worry was never really about what was going on at the line – it’s been about everything between that line and the end zone. Not only are the Steelers soft on the edges, but they can’t cover the seams and it is devastating.
A systemic failure to find and develop talent that fits into Keith Butler’s defensive scheme is in the spotlight right now. Tomlin’s overall strategy is now being analyzed by everyone in the NFL – but no one in the Steelers organization seems to be willing to say ‘enough’.
The Steelers coaching staff can continue to talk about how they have to do better, how the offense is full of talent and how the team just needs to correct mistakes until they are blue in the face. Until they act on those words, this team is headed in a bad direction and likely to miss any chance at a showing in the post season.
