Steelers to Visit with WR Jerricho Cotchery Sunday; Sweed Hurts Shoulder

Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times reports free agent wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery will visit the Steelers on Sunday. Cotchery will also take a physical with the Steelers.

However, Cotchery remains in the talks with the Ravens, who could make a big push for his services after losing Derrick Mason to the Jets on Saturday. Cotchery could slide right into Mason’s old role in Baltimore.

Limas Sweed, who simply is trying to make the roster for the Steelers after a couple years he’d rather forget, hurt his right shoulder during the afternoon practice and currently has it wrapped and kneeling on the sideline.

The severity of the injury will likely be determined after practice. Sweed is in the 4th and final year of his contract after being drafted in the second round of the 2008 draft.

As far as Sweed is concerned, I’d like to forget his seasons too. I’ll even take it one further. I’d like to forget the time his name was called at the draft

This tells me, you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about! You don’t know the Steelers either. Stupid!

First Marie, that wasn’t Dr.George. Someone posed as the Doc to be an idiot. Second, nobody cares about a females opinion.

Thanks, Tony H. You’re right about the eponymous gutter-mouth above. He is an imposter. And Mr. Crowley is the interloper from the Raven’s site that all the regulars here know too well.

However, I am curious about everyone’s opinion of Cotchery as a possible Steelers WR? And yes, Marie, that includes you. I’m not that familiar with Cotchery’s recent performance. Where do you think he would fit in among the WRs?

Honestly it might be farfetched but I think we should take a flier on Randy Moss. He says hes retired but if a contender comes along im sure hel bite

    DrGeorge,

He’s not a big play WR by any means, but he’s got decent hands, and his highlight of last year was making a great catch in OT vs Cleveland on a play where he pulled his hamstring.

Tough kid, more of that possession type WR that is not bad on third downs. If they can get him cheap (and the market for him won’t be that high), I may take a flier on him.

No worse than Sweed (who wont even make the team), and Arnaz Battle. With injuries, he could be a stop gap till Ward and Sanders come back.

Thanks, Matt. Good insights. We thought even last year that Sweed’s days were numbered, and his recent injury will make that decision even easier.

But it seems strange that the Steelers would release Randle El without having a replacement in hand. Surely, it wasn’t about money — they won’t get Cotchery for much less than Randle El, and he already knew the system. I’m willing to give Colbert and Tomlin the benefit of the doubt on this move, but it all seems very strange; perhaps because we don’t have all of the facts.

It would be fun, as Jay suggests, to see Randy Moss reunited with Leftwich, and the attraction of going to the Super Bowl with a genuine contender must be obvious to him; the question is whether his head is in the game these days. His life has been one long struggle against authority and discipline; that’s not a track record that will commend him to the Rooneys, no matter how talented he is. With S. Holmes in mind, I doubt that it will happen.

I like the Cotchery idea and I am further intrigued by the Moss idea! If Tomlin could sit him down and be like, “Look, you the redzone guy, we’re second only to New England in terms of appearances and wins this decade in the Super Bowl; hell we’re in it almost every other year. Come here, do your job, you’ll be featured in the redone at least 50-75% of the time and we’ll regularly throw you a bone between the twenties.” Imagine Ward, Wallace, Miller and Moss inside the ten yard line with Mendy in the backfield! I’m sorry but that’s six points 80%-90% of the time!
